Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.
Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.
A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.
Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.
Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.
I should have gone straight to Whitby. Staying in York for one night was a mistake although I enjoyed a walk around some parts of the city wall. Thanks to the misinformation on the maps posted on lamp posts around the city, the location of the Visitors Information Centre was incorrect. Nothing on the door of the old centre gave information about the new location, local people had no idea where it was. I spent a good hour walking around trying to find it. I did not find the staff particularly helpful once I got there. Comments like, "take a taxi" and The Coastal Rambler is only £.. when I asked about using my bus pass. I prefer to make my own decisions as to what I spend my money on, definitely not taxis! I found your city map for £1 unhelpful as no street index given, what a contrast to £1 spent in Whitby Visitors Centre which covered Whitby, Filey and Scarborough, all with street indexes. Please forward these comments to the City Council.

Unfortunately flooded during stay.
Unfortunately flooded during stay. Car parking at central accommodations very difficult to find and expensive. Good for variety of pubs, bars, restaurants, historical buildings and architecture but very busy at weekends

York is such a beautiful city, and has the most heritage and history crammed into a small foot print. You can walk the whole city in a couple of hours (within the walls)
Stunning Cathedral, stunning building dating back thousands of years.
There is an ambience in York, whilst it can get busy mid day the calm of the city is soothing.
Amazing restaurants, cafes and bars overall a must do if you have never been.

Have stayed at hotel on numerous occasions and was always satisfied.
This time we found it was not our liking the hotel
Although staff were very polite and helpful the hotel and cleanliness was far below our expectations
The increase in costs is not justified in what we experienced,
We will seriously consider staying at the hotel in future and look at alternative accommodation when we revisit York in the future,
I have sent reviews before and have never received
Any feed back, do these reviews ever get registered?

The shambles were so pretty, different shops and architecture to look at. The Minster although we did not go in was amazing. The Ghost Bus we would thoroughly recommend. Food, hospitality all lovely. Very friendly helpful locals. Need to come back to explore more.
The room was on the small side but perfect for one traveller. Convenient location so it was easy to walk to the centre of York and to the railway station from the hotel. I didn’t have breakfast or evening meal as I was meeting a friend who was on a day visit from Newcastle and so we dined in the city centre. The staff that I met were helpful. I’ve recommended the venue to my son who travels frequently for business.
Everything. It was perfect exactly how a 5 star hotel should be. From the lovely doorman who was so lovely and friendly and welcoming, the valet, reception, the concierge, the restraunt staff etc they were all brilliant and a credit to the company. We had such a lovely stay, the rooms were beautiful and absolutely spotless. We will definitely be back again whenever we are in York. This hotel made our weekend.
Bus stop near hotel to get into York City centre. A couple of local pubs close by although we only went into one of them for drinks and a meal. Hotel and our room clean and smelt nice. Breakfast good. Plenty of parking although there is a charge of £7 (approx) per night.
