The White Lion Hotel, hotel in Machynlleth

Around 30 minutes’ drive from Aberystwyth, The White Lion Hotel is a traditional Welsh inn in the town of Machynlleth.

Room was clean and reasonably spacious, and staff were helpful when we asked them to store a bike and some wet clothes.

I stayed in Machynlleth with friends.

I stayed in Machynlleth with friends. Mach is a good base to explore Ceredigion to the south, and Gwynedd to the north. Mach also has its own MOMA, with galleries and concert hall, railway station, site of Owain Glyndwr's parliament, and Y Plas conference centre. Ample bars, restaurants, and accommodation from budget to 3*. Biosphere nearby. Web searches for Mach will likely show these and more.

We had an amazing stay at the cottage!

We had an amazing stay at the cottage! It was spotlessly clean, peaceful, and incredibly comfortable. The property had all the facilities we needed, making us feel completely at home. Highly recommend for a relaxing getaway! Alex was incredibly friendly and supportive throughout our stay. She even took the time to suggest a few great local spots to visit, which made our trip even more enjoyable. Thanks to her recommendations, we got to explore some hidden gems in the area! Machynlleth has become very run down.

Machynlleth has become very run down. Although The White Lion has been refurbed, very messy outside. Not sure why they are able to have loud music until 2am. The Red Lion changed hands, very sterile in there. The council would have been better to have used the money for the refurb of the tower clock on the town itself. They have had no thought on the potential impact on guests staying in hotels, particularly the Wynnstay whose best room priced at £175 is within 50 feet of the clock which chimes every fifteen mins and bongs on the hour. Impossible to sleep!!!!!

Most of all we were genuinely touched by how friendly and helpful people are there. When we were in Cemlyn nature reserve, we started chatting with a local and we mentioned that we are from Slovenia and that we would like to see some cliffs. He pointed some great ones for us to see. After saying goodbye we headed slowly to our car. Behind windshield wiper we found hand drawn map of the way to cliffs. We couldn't even speak! The nature is really amazing. Maybe we were lucky that we booked our trip in april because there were not many tourists and we had pleasent experience. But nevertheless people would always be great there, I'm sure.

Machynlleth is a great town to visit, but very quiet on Mondays with a lot of shops/cafes closed. MOMA is great for those enjoying gallery space and there are several antique shops for browsers. The Deli near the clock tower has wonderful offerings, sadly the kitchen was closed the day of my visit but I left with bags of goodies to eat later. Wednesday is the day to visit when the market takes over the wide main main street.

It’s always nice to stay somewhere that isn’t a hotel. It was very relaxing. I turned up in the dark so really felt like the middle of nowhere haha. The heating was good, underfloor, maybe got a bit too hot at one point cause I thought the heating wasn’t working as it took a while to kick in (same with the bathroom radiator - would have been good to have a little note saying, don’t worry it’ll get warm, it just takes a while). The shower was good too. Very warm and powerful.

We went to the Cefn Crib Cabins, for a 4 nights stay, to celebrate my birthday, and it was superb,a cosy little cabin, ideally situated, between Machynlleth and Aberdovey. Sian was a great host and came to see us on our last day, just to make sure we have had a good time.

The ground floor of this old hotel is mostly used for the popular restaurant that serves food of a very high standard. The staff and food exceeded my expectations. There is a small bar and a lot of space.

Room was okay but spartan - no bedside tables for instance. Bed comfortable. Very much a pub with rooms rather than a hotel. Food good but no restaurant.
