Ashley Hotel, hotel in Cambridge

Made of 2 Victorian houses built around 1900, Ashley Hotel offers full English breakfasts, free Wi-Fi and free parking, a 20-minute walk from Cambridge town centre.

The outside, to be honest looked a little grubby and we wondered whether we had made a mistake. However, inside was very different. Our twin room and en suite were extremely clean and well furnished, with immaculate linen, white fluffy towels and smelled fresh. The breakfast was really good, with an excellent choice. We had the cooked breakfast, which was exceptionally good. The staff were really friendly. We will definitely use this hotel again.

FAQs about hotels in Cambridge

The Inspiration for Genius

Open-plan and open-minded, Cambridge is best known for university colleges dating to the 13th century. King’s College is the most popular, and its chapel choir is internationally famous. Although accessed from cobbled King’s Parade, it is best viewed from a punt on The Backs, the part of the River Cam behind.

Cambridge punting is an institution and gives great views of Queen’s College Mathematical Bridge and the Bridge of Sighs at St John’s College. Upstream is Jesus Green, site of an outdoor pool and a fantastic beer festival. Next to this is Midsummer Common, a park home to the annual Strawberry Fair (and the occasional cow). Opposite are the college boathouses - get up early to see the rowers in action!

Cows also roam the Mill Pond meadow, where the river leads south to Grantchester, a quaint village with a lovely cafe. Places to eat in Cambridge include riverside restaurants and typical English pubs like The Eagle, drinking hole of DNA founders Watson & Crick.

Cambridge shopping options include a daily market (in Market Square), the Grafton Centre and the exclusive Grand Arcade, the latest addition. The Scott Polar Museum and free Fitzwilliam Museum are 2 of many fantastic Cambridge museums.

Stansted Airport is connected by train to the city’s accommodation choices on Booking.com.

Fascinating city to visit, and with so much to explore, some planning will be very useful: e.g. museums are excellent, but closed on Monday. Driving and parking in the city is very restricted, but park and ride services are excellent, so if staying outside Cambridge, stay close to a park and ride depot.

We visited St John's College and the kids enjoyed a go on the outside rowing machine and we punted on the Cam avoiding the drizzle. Cambridge was full of character, great book shops, great shops, lots of eateries and we ended up in a pub (as we were eating at inbetween times for food at cafes/restaurants) and it was a theatre themed one just off the main square with free shuffleboard and we ate in a converted barrel...great little find! Wish we'd come on Friday and stayed for two nights as so much to see/do. We visited the cathedral in Ely on the way down and climbed the Octagon Tower which was amazing though not great for me without a head for heights. Also ate in the Almonry Restaurant which has a vaulted cellar - perfect afternoon tea and service in a fabulous setting. Couldn't fault it except we just ran out of time.

I was attending a specific function for Alumni of my College...

I was attending a specific function for Alumni of my College in the University. However, for general visitors there is much of interest to see in the second-oldest University in England. Apart from the Colleges themselves, most of which can be visited for a small charge, and with architecture ranging from the thirteenth to the twenty-second century, there are many civic buildings as well as museums and galleries, such as the Fitzwilliam Museum and Kettles Yard.. One day is not enough to see it all! There are also pursuits such as punting on the River Cam (and Granta), as well as riverside walks both up and downstream. There is further interest to be had in the villages and countryside around Cambridge: the Imperial War Museum Aircraft at Duxford, Oliver Cromwell’s Birthplace in Huntingdon, the cathedral at Ely, Rupert Brooke’s Granchester, the festival of Morris Dancing at Thetford (annual event), and much else…. Within Cambridge itself, the City Centre is compact and mostly pedestrianised, elsewhere the local buses are pretty efficient. NB. Ccar Parking in Cambridge is pretty horrendous and very expensive, but a very good alternative is the Park-and-Ride arrangement : Three separate parking places round the outskirts of Cambridge with frequent buses into the centre (and stops along the routes) at £3.00 return, flat rate fares. Brilliant!

Cambridge seemed packed with tourists even though, being September, it was apparently past the peak tourist season. The Colleges have understandably stopped visitor access and this is a pity, but, yes understandable.

Cambs is a superb city, As I am from Hants and Oxford is very dear to me I was biased before I even arrived, however I was completely wrong. What a superb city, museums we excellent, we visited the David Attenbrough and the Scott poloar, both very interesting. No plans to return any time soon but we would love to, such a very nice city indeed.

We had a great stay at Centennial hotel, couldn’t fault anything. Our room was clean, comfortable and quiet. The hotel is in a great location and the car park is a massive bonus, we left our car and walked into the city centre which is an easy walk along a straight road and takes about 15 mins. The staff were lovely and breakfast was delicious. Great value for money and I will definitely be staying again when I’m next in Cambridge!
