FAQs about hotels in Birmingham

First-class Shopping, Culture and Sports

The UK's 2nd largest city, Birmingham is one of its top cultural centers. Well-known for its M6 Spaghetti Junction interchange, it's also a surprisingly green city with lots of open spaces.

Most city center hotels in Birmingham are near New Street Station. To the east is the futuristic architecture of the new Bull Ring shopping center, and behind that is Digbeth Bus Station. To the west is Victoria Square, home of the town hall and a German Christmas Market.

The Mailbox is one of the newest additions to the Birmingham shopping scene, and behind it is one of the canals converging on the Gas Street Basin. By one canal are the ICC (International Convention Center) and the NIA (National Indoor Arena), both venues that host major events.

Just across the street is Brindleyplace, a canal-front complex of restaurants, bars and hotels near Broad Street – the main nightlife area. It is popular with students at nearby Birmingham University, whose clock tower is modeled on the one in Siena. Just south in Bournville is Cadbury World, and there are several hotels on Hagley Road to the north, which are available on Booking.com.

The city is also known for sports – Aston Villa and Birmingham City are the top soccer clubs, while Edgbaston Cricket Ground hosts international matches. Other Birmingham attractions include Hockley’s Jewellery Quarter and the NEC arena by Birmingham International Airport.

We wondered around the city centre and enjoyed the lights. There was Xmas set up going on in the city centre which was exciting to see for what’s to come in December. We explored around and loved the canal.

Lots of people and traffic, I know it's a city but just an eye opener for me from the 'quieter parts' of Britain. Big Cities, of course, also increases the amount of litter, the number of beggars and druggies about and even more taxi/Uber drivers ignoring most road signs and them doing what they want then we have the police sirens....wow they seem to running from job to job on blues every time as it seemed like every few minutes , there was another going off. But you felt safe, probably due to number of people still about late at night, plenty of Hotels, lots of old and new buildings etc to see and experience but how, there wasn't a riot when the city council first built the 'council house' building, I'll never know! Talk about over the top exuberance looking after themselves!! WOW!!! Then you got the trams of course, The Bull ring and the Grand central station which seemed bigger than the shopping centre itself as every alleyway seemed to take you back to it!

The weather certainly helped - shirt sleeves in October are uncommonly warm. Busy city centre - lots to do. The Grand Central / Bullring retail centre is loud, proud and almost as big as Ozzy, the metal automaton bull in the plaza of New Street Station. If you're not hurrying away by train, check out cosy little Moor Street station - a few steps only but many decades removed from its big brother - and the charming Great Western Railway buffet is perfect for relaxing with tea and scones - and watch the low winter sunrise straight down the platforms.

    The traffic system is horrible.

The traffic system is horrible. You can't find your way easily and get confused so that you wander onto the bus lanes and then they fine you like they did with me! I like the are around Birmingham and the people seem generally friendly and kind. But the traffic system is a nightmare and just designed to trap you in it: I had to go round and round it four or five times before I could exit it. I only know one other town I've visited in the UK where it's been this bad - and I'm not even referring to central London. And the parking - even further out - is too expensive. It seems the local council make it very hard for hotelliers to run a business. The NEC is good though.

I found Birmingham very pleasant. The people I Met were very friendly and helpful. I’m from London and although it is a busy city not quite as hectic as London. I think some of the statues show a bit of humour. I like floozy in the jacuzzi in Victoria Square. The canal area is really nice shame I didn’t get to explore more. I went to a concert at Symphony hall which I thought was a great venue. I’d go again and stay a day or 2 longer next time. I walked to my hotel from the station and found it easy to get around.
