We were met upon arrival by the owner who was delightful. She has this great app on her phone that she spoke into and told us the history of the town, the building we were spending the night in, and the views of the vineyards were remarkable. The exposed wooden beams throughout the apartment were spectacular.
Housed in a historic building, Appartement calme Le clos de Renée features accommodations with a terrace and free Wifi in Hautvillers, 3.6 miles from Epernay Train Station.
A great little town in the hills above Epernay. With all the facilities you would need, Nice little bars and restaurants. Of course, it is the middle of the Champagne region is their prices are to be expected. There are a multitude of vineyards to pick from. Most of their vineyards are labelled as to the owners, so you can find the exact field in which your champagne was grown in (other than Moet) Gobillard and Tritant recommended. A large Leclerc hypermarket is only a few miles down the hill, this side of Epernay.

On the champagne tourist route.
On the champagne tourist route. Visit the abbey where Dom Perignon is buried. Plenty of small champagne houses in the village. Lovely views over the valley. You need a car. It’s near other villages and Eperney. Only one or two shops. It does have a cafe and a bakery but no restaurants for evening meals.

Hautvillers is a small beautiful "Champenois" village.
Hautvillers is a small beautiful "Champenois" village. There is a lot of Champagne producers, big ones but also Vignerons Indépendants (small producers, making generally organic champagne). It definitely worth the stay, or the detour at least. We bought some fine champagne for my brother's wedding from a small producer, the wedding was in Spain, and everybody enjoyed it! You can access the village very easily from Reims or Epernay, go for multiple hikes in the forests around (e.g. the exceptional site of "Les Faux de Verzy"). You have a few restaurants and bars, but I would suggest to book something in Epernay or Reims for the evening diners. You have a huge supermarket near Epernay (5 min by car) but nothing in the village itself.
