I didn't expect to find much to do in Tarifa, it was just a stop off for our return flight to the UK from Gibraltar, having been in Tangier. But it was actually a lovely place - very pretty, more upscale, and safer feeling than I expected for a port town. We were only there for 1 day and night, I'd definitely visit again to explore a bit more. Maybe don't go if you don't like dogs - we saw loads of them!

Tarifa is a lovely old town with a tremendous town wall still in place on the west side of town. It is a romantic place with lovely little street, lots of shops and restaurants and bars, a ruined castle and old fortification near the harbour. A cute covered daily market offers meats, sausages, cheeses, flowers, clothing, plants and a spectacular display of fresh fish of the day to buy and also served to eat there and then.
There are several ferries going daily to various places in Morocco. You can't get bored here.
Public buses are very comfortable and punctual and super cheap to explore the surrounding area or coming/going to the airport.
Ice cream in Tarifa is the best and plentiful - I am ice cream addicted.

Tarifa is a mixture of holiday apartments, residential apartments and the old town plus a port where ferry goes to Tangiers. It is best known for kitesurfing as it is often windy and a long sandy beach. It is also a superb location to use as a base for watching bird migration and there is a bird observatory (Cazella) above the town off the main road towards Algiceras. There are plenty of little shops as well as supermarkets and bars. The old town is lovely, but some of the bars are overpriced. A beer in a backstreet taverna is 2 euros, but one bar in the old town charged me 4.5 (La Fabrica). Some good ice cream shops! Tarifa is geared towards tourists especially kitesurfers.

Tarifa has one of the best beaches I've been to.
Tarifa has one of the best beaches I've been to. Large, with fine sand, clean and easy entry into the water. Due to the winds, the area is good for water sports (kite surfing, etc), not so much for swimming, due to the waves. Good position to watch the sun set into the sea.
Great place to chill at a bar nearby the beach, eat ice cream, have dinner.
Tarifa is also very close to Morocco, a short ferry ride away from Tangier. Highly recommend the trip if you have the opportunity.

A good place to stay, connected to the Silos19 Restaurant. This place is very close to the main road through Tarifa, but on a pedestrian side street. Located at the 'top' of Tarifa old city so you walk down about 7 -10 minutes to get to the ferry and beach. The rooms are clean, and ours had a very spacious bathroom! There is a small fridge and coffee provided in the room as well as at reception. The hotel graciously accommodated our early arrival.
Basic but very comfortable hotel outside the old town but just a short walk away and not far from the beaches. We had a room on the top floor which had a big communal terrace outside with a great outlook out over the town to the sea. Staff were friendly and let us check in early as the room was ready. Very good value for money. Would stay here again.
Beautiful old property that has been in the family for almost 50 years, very clean and comfortable. Jesus the owner is very kind and friendly. Close proximity to the bars, shops, restaurants, old town and beach. Despite being next to a road, it was still nice and quiet too
Very wholesome, great location right in centre of old town tarifa. Lovely welcoming staff who are also very helpful. Would 100% recommend with friends & for couples. Wifi worked very well & air con is great for the summer months.
Gorgeous little boutique hotel perfectly located in Tarifa old town. This is our second visit as we really like it - fulfils our every need, with a tasty free breakfast in the morning. Friendly staff, clean and beautiful rooms.
