Grandhotel Brno, hotel in Brno

Looking back on a 140 year-long tradition in hospitality, this centrally located hotel in the heart of Brno’s picturesque old town is close to all major sights.

Breakfast was a good selection of lovely food, both cooked and cold. We travelled by train and the hotel is basically across from the train station. The old town starts behind the hotel and the main sights can be easily reached on foot. If anyone wants to sleep with open windows it would be very noisy but we needed the air-conditioning and didn't open windows at all. Great sound proofing! Lovely and very helpful staff at the reception, they answered all of our questions and stored our luggage the last day after checking out.

FAQs about hotels in Brno

The Historic Heart of Moravia

The 2nd largest Czech city, Brno is a centre of Moravian culture, surrounded by lush countryside. The twin spires of the hilltop Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul dominate the neighbouring Bishops Palace, while the nearby square houses the Moravia Museum and Reduta Theatre, both the oldest in the country.

Beneath the square is Brno Underground, a maze of medieval tunnels and cellars that once housed wine produced in the surrounding region. There is an annual wine festival here, but the largest event is the Ignis Brunensis fireworks competition by Brno Lake to the north-west, lined by trees that hide Veveří Castle.

A less grand castle - Špilberk - sits on a hill in the city centre. At its feet is Masaryk University, the 2nd largest in the Czech Republic. The city’s Mendel University is named after the genetics founder who was abbot of St Thomas’ Abbey, where a museum commemorates his work.

The nearby Brno Exhibition Centre is of functionalist design, but the most important example of this architectural style is UNESCO World Heritage-listed Villa Tugendhat. On the opposite side of the city is Masaryk Circuit, home of the Czech MotoGP.

The Brno accommodation on Booking.com includes cheap hostels near the train station, guest houses near Freedom Square and hotels by Brno-Tuřany Airport.

I bought a Brnopass, so it was cheaper to see the local sights. The most interesting sights - churches, the ossium, the old town hall, the cellar of the new town hall, Špilberk Castle, the crypt of the Capuchins, the zoo - could be visited in 1-1.5 days. By public transport, you can reach the Punkva cave, with its beautiful stalactites, within an hour. There are also good hiking trails. Public transport in the city is good and it is easy to buy tickets with a credit card.

    Brno is lovely!

Brno is lovely! We stayed at the Barcelo which was a fantastic hotel. For fine evening dining, we would recommend the Grandezza Restaurant which was exceptional. Wonderful fish and muscles. For breakfast, we would recommend Bavard cafe where you can get an exceptional breakfast. If you need a cheeky kebab, then Kebab Šach was great. For antiques and jewelry shopping, we visited Patrice Antiques (patrice-antiques.cz) and found a gorgeous vintage ring for my wife's birthday. For culture, we would recommend The Museum of Romani Culture (rommuz.cz) which was very powerful, well-curated, and in-depth. They provide English hand-held audio guides if you don't speak Czech too. The cafe there is nice as well. To get around, take the trams! (They are cheaper and cleaner than Prague's)

A nice town, with some must-see places.

A nice town, with some must-see places. What I really liked is that there were not very big distances between places. We either walked or rented an e-scooter between the hotel and the center. There were nice restaurants, with local and international cuisine. The only downside were the constuctions. Some of the roads were under construction, therefore driving was a bit challenging, and the St. Jakub church was also under renovation and we could not visit it. Apart from that we had a great expereince. Brno lake was only 20-minutes drive and it also provided a great experience.

Brno is a lovely place to visit.

Brno is a lovely place to visit. A very good mix of the old (castle, cathedral and old town) and the new (everything you'd expect in a university town), but without all the tourists of Prague - it's more school trips than tour guides. Lots of interesting history including that this is where Gregor Mendel did his work that lead to the theory of genetics. Worth doing: the cathedral towers for the views, the town hall and tower, the castle (great views and lovely cafes). The trams go everywhere and a day ticket (on sale at tourist information in town hall) is cheap. Visitors from UK will appreciate a big Tesco behind the main station (get yourself a CZ Clubcard). Local (Moravian) food is hearty and filling and the beers are good and cheap, with plenty of bars and restaurants in the town centre. Late-opening ice cream shops are a bonus!

Great hotel for a cheap price. We stayed for one night on a way to Croatia. The hotel is quite difficult to find but when we found the car park of a hotel then it was by the same building. The rooms had what we needed- a bathroom and beds. There was a tv set as well. The breakfast was good and icluded in the price. It was clean and the Staff very helpful. A Very nice lady in the dining area and the reception. We visited city Centre by tram.

The apartment was huge and the main bed was very comfortable. There were plenty of amenities, including ice in the freezer and decent coffee for the machine (not just instant!) Anna was very helpful and allowed us a later checkout. Location is right next to the Grand Hotel, which is more expensive and not as nice as this apartment!
