Zhong An Hotel Beijing Former Residence of Journalist Edgar Snow, hotel in Beijing

Beijing Zhong An Hotel is a 5-minute walk from Beijing Railway Station. It features a 24-hour front desk and rooms with private bathrooms. Free WiFi and free parking are provided.

My nieces and I stayed in this hotel before and after travelling to Jinshanling to hike the Great Wall. We absolutely loved everything about this hotel! The location is great, a 5 or 10 minute walk from Beijing station, which makes it very easy to get anywhere in the city you need to go by metro. If you follow the directions that somebody helpfully wrote in the hotel reviews on booking.com you should have no trouble finding this lovely little non-western hotel chain hotel. The staff are lovely and speak some English, they are gracious, welcoming and helpful. The hotel itself is quite proud of their connection to the writer Edgar Snow and it shows in all the little touches in the rooms and the thorough information in the lobby. The rooms are spotlessly clean, spacious with comfortable beds (most beds in China and Asia are hard, these are no exception but they’re clean with nice bedding). There is a sweet courtyard in the centre of the hotel where you can sit and enjoy drinks or food from the onsite restaurant. We loved this place, it is charming and well kept and felt so much better than staying in a characterless western style hotel. I will stay here again if I come back to Beijing, with much pleasure!

FAQs about hotels in Beijing

From Chinese Dynasties to Cultural Dynamics

A world-renowned gem, sprawling Beijing has magnificent monuments and peaceful parks. At its heart is the world’s largest square, Tiananmen, surrounded by important museums and the amazing Forbidden City. This 15th-century, walled complex of palaces neighbors Jingshan Park and Beihai Park with its imperial garden.

Across from Tiananmen Square is the ultra-modern National Center for Perfoming Arts, a beacon of the city’s culture so impressively displayed at the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the Bird’s Nest Stadium.

To its east is the UNESCO World Heritage listed Summer Palace, a lakeside retreat of emperors, while also UNESCO listed is the grand Temple of Heaven in Chongwen district, where remnants of Ming dynasty city walls are visible. Nearby are several hutongs, narrow alleys with traditional architecture, that contrast with wider, modern roads like Beijing Financial Street, the city's business area.

The most popular Beijing shopping street is Wangfujing, and other must-see sights include the giant pandas at Beijing Zoo and the Great Wall of China, an easy day trip from Beijing.

As you would expect from the capital of the world’s most populous country, there are a good number of 5-star hotels in Beijing on Booking.com, mainly in the Dongcheng and Chaoyang districts. There are also several hotels near Beijing Capital Airport in the northeast.

Beijing is a beautiful green city, of which we had the ability to hire bicycles for a very small fee and ride around the city (these are a great alternative to walking in the humid summer from destination to destination). There are bike lanes and plenty of green trees and parks, along with plenty of stops for cold drinks and ice creams on the side of the roads. It is beautiful! Short access to the Great Wall of China was a plus also. Great to wander around, friendly people, clean, trendy, good cafes and tasty food! Easy to use metro and bus system. Great culture. Just be sure to set up an E-Sim and AliPay before arriving to China or you could be in a bit of a pickle :)

The visit to the summer palace, Great wall, Tiananmen Square and Forbidden city was excellent. Everything was well organised by the local tour operators and the guides assigned to us could communicate well in English. All travellers should have the Alipay and DiDi taxi Apps installed on your phone to get around the city. Taxis don't accept cash.

Amazing place - so much to see and do.

Amazing place - so much to see and do. Modern city with clean air - most cars are electric but lots on congestion as you would expect. Subway very modern and much much quicker than Road. Subway network is extensive- single journeys approx 3 yuan / 30 pence. Alipay recommended. Some subway trains have ‘cool’ compartments at the front and ‘cold’ at the rear, which is nice. You can visit Tiananmen Square and the forbidden city in half a day - be prepared for lots of walking. The temple of heaven is fascinating, where the emporers worshipped and there is a market across the road with food and drink ground floor and traditional haggling for clothes etc.. on the other floors, although the markets appear ‘modernised’ to years ago. The great wall is a definite must do bucket list and you will get your weeks steps in one day. We got the ski lift up from the car park and toboggan down which is a novelty. Worth having a driver for flexibility. Great food and atmosphere in traditional Hutong area - recommend early evening - so much choice and all very decent and reasonable. Wan fu jing is the modern ‘gentrified’ area- try the hanging roast duck in quan Jude, which is a chain and very popular. There is a small Japenese strip just of the main wan fu jing strip, which has nice bars and restaurants. Highly recommended Beijing - you will not stop and definitely not be bored.

A special city to do so much in a short space of time; visit the Great Wall (Muitang), the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, discover delicious food etc etc. The city is very easy and cheap to get around via metro and DiDi (Uber). I found the locals very friendly and funny/ a good sense of humour. It’s very serene at the parks at night, and unlike much of Europeans too destinations is still authentic and very affordable.

Interesting. Basically cash only for Weterners.

Interesting. Basically cash only for Weterners. Few places take VISA, Mastercard. Attractions are a pain to get into to, daily allocation of tickets olnie, first come first servied and booked for 5 days ahead. Very inexpensive food, drink, metro. Decent sidewalks, road layout, crossings etc. Safe. Lots of Police presence. Not the best place I have been, not the worst place I have been. Been once, no need to go again. Worth going to and experience but not a return-to destination. Airport is a drag and security is heavy handed - Allow plenty, plenty, of time.

Our family had a wonderful experience staying at the Crowne Plaza Beijing Lido, an IHG Hotel. The staff was accommodating and warm, especially Mrs. Wang Hai Li, who was very patient in answering all our queries and kindly upgraded our standard king room to a one-bedroom suite with a view of the bath for free. The breakfast was delicious with a variety of options. The location was very good and easily accessible to the metro and international airport. There are many good restaurants nearby. We would come back to this hotel again.

Amazing location, so convenient for subway, airport transfer, trolleybus etc. Really spacious rooms always kept meticulously clean (my housekeeper on the second stay was an incredibly kind and sweet lady). Fridge ceaselessly stocked with water. Fabulous value for money. Extraordinary variety at breakfast. Helpful reception staff, many of whom spoke good English. You couldn't hope for a better 'standard' hotel in Beijing.
