I have had a couple of trips to Broken Hill and the area surrounding it. I love the vastness and the Tourist attractions are great. The Supermarkets are wonderful, the people are so friendly and the town is so clean. The old buildings provide a lovely backdrop for Photos. It may be a city - but it does not take long to get used to the Street layout.

Broken Hill is a must stay for the long-distance traveler.
Broken Hill is a must stay for the long-distance traveler. It's the only decent sized town with all the needs of the traveler between Cobar and Adelaide. There are all the usual food options, auto parts, accessories and auto service however don't expect much on weekends. Accommodation choice ranges from comfortable miners cottages to pubs and motels (book ahead). Broken Hill is easy to navigate as all the streets are straight and intersect at right angles. Parking in the street is usually 45deg back in. Finding a park for a car with trailer/caravan can be difficult. There is no shortage of pubs in town but many are closed or do not offer a food menu.

Broken Hill is a unique Australian outback city with plenty to see and do in the town itself and within a comfortable drive. A lot of cafes, pubs and clubs to eat at and one high class restaurant - Saltbush. Additionally, museums and art galleries. The Living Desert including the Sculptor Park is well worth a look

There are plenty of places to visit in Broken Hill.
There are plenty of places to visit in Broken Hill. We had 5 nights there and there were still many places that we didn't get to visit.
The Visitor Information Centre is excellent, with very informative and helpful assistants and plenty of brochures to look at. (Plus plenty of seating, tables, toilet facilities and a Gloria Jeans cafe)
The heritage walking tour around the CBD area was worthwhile and our guide, Judy, gave us much insight into the history of this interesting outback city.
We were fortunate to be able to join the Wontanella walking tour on the shores of one of the Menindee lakes. Dave, the tour guide, was very informative, happy to answer our many questions and gave us an insight to the lives of the people who lived there.
The Broken Hill Mining Museum and White's Mineral Art Gallery is a must. Don't be put off by the exterior of the place. Larry, a former B.H. miner, has so much knowledge of the mining history and is able to put it in an interesting and informative manner. One can get a feel of being in a mine, without going underground! "Bushy" White's mineral art work that is on display is amazing.
The GEO Centre (The Albert Kersten Mining and Mineral Museum) is definitely worth a visit: one does not have to be a geologist to admire the incredible displays of stunning mineral crystals.
The Line of Lode memorial on top of the "hill" was very sobering as one reflects on the huge number of miners killed in extracting the ore, that has brough great wealth to our country.
The Pro Hart gallery was also worth a visit.
Plenty of places to eat or to get a takeaway (delicious food from the Kebab House). Enjoyed lunch at the Silverton Pub, which had many, many photos of its history in films and commercials.

It is a great tourist spot but you need people like Milton,s tours to get around easily. I mainly went for a wedding but had to stay because of train times. I mostly ate at the DEMO club. Once again it was handy.

The property was clean and well stocked and maintained. It is at the end of the Iodide Street and Argent Street so within easy walking distance from eateries (Cafe Alfresca and The Palace Hotel) and within easy access to Broken Hill station and the Miners Memorial. Wednesday night was Karaoke Night at The Palace. Access in and out of town is via Iodide Street, The Barrier Highway and Silver City Highway. There is easy off-street parking.
Broken Hill is always booked out and we had to stay at this motel because our other accommodation was only available for the first two nights of our three night stay. This turned out to be one of the best motels I've stayed in in years - sparkling clean, no weird smell, comfortable. Little plastic sleeves over the remote control. Just excellent. It was the mid-point in a 12 day road trip and was, without a doubt, the best motel of all.
Despite a little confusion about which cottage we had booked, Dani soon sorted us out. 511 Argent St is a charming period cottage nicely furnished with a pleasant homely feel. Only 10 minute stroll down Argent St to the Astra and BHP hotels where the pub grub was delicious. The Silly Goat coffee shop was excellent for breakfast.
Basically a caravan park with about 20 cabins. Room is a good size with a really nice private balcony overlooking the bush. About 10km out of town, near the highway but not noisy. Decent pub and meals. Not doing breakfast at the moment.
The lack Lion is no longer a pub, you have to go round the corner to get meals at the Demo Club, but its hotel rooms are good and down-to-earth with nice warm beds. Staff very helpful :)
