We needed an immediate place to stay at Midnight after landing in CM and had a problem. They responded right away, told us it was no problem and we zipped over. Clean, and decent beds. That’s all we needed. We were gone by 10 am. Thank you for accommodating us at the last minute. I wouldn’t stay here for a vacation. It’s very very basic and in a terrible location. But again, fit my specific needs.

The t Chiang Mai Tourist office -excellent - info and helpful even when helping us book a private taxi. Try Welcome Inn bar and restaurant. Food is very good. Service great. Music every night. Walk around the old wall. Take a trip up Doi Suthep ( past the temple) to the coffee growing area - see roasting in action- try great coffee . Amazing views from high up mountain. It’s a longish drive- about an hour and a half each way. Need to be fit - lots of stairs.

We had 4 nights in Chiang Mai and spent each day on tours of the wider area. We enjoyed seeing the Hill tribes, elephant rescue centre, Chang Rai, the Golden Triangle. I would love to go to Chiang Mai again but would like more days so we could have more time to relax and enjoy the lovely climate and scenery. We were not adventurous enough with food and so often found ourselves eating thai food that was modified/ mild for the western palate. Next time I would seek out more local authentic food.

Lovely old city with a range of historic and modern attractions (including ancient city walls, large number of temples (wats), etc.) Also don't miss Wat Doi Sutep (short drive from City Centre), Doi Inthanon (highest point in Thailand - about 90 minute drive - with Royal Pagodas and national park to walk around). Aroy Dee (lovely local old city, good value restaurant - don't miss the Khao Soi noodles).

I booked accommodation in Chiang Mai for 19 nights because...
I booked accommodation in Chiang Mai for 19 nights because it was so affordable. However, I also booked 4 nights in Chiang Rai and 2 nights in Pai during those 19 nights (so I double booked for 6 nights). It meant that I could travel to other places without the hassle of packing and checking out all the time. I think that the division of time was about right. I felt that I saw all the biggest attractions in all three towns during my stay.

20 yrs ago, we lived in C.M. for over 2 years but on this trip we still found some things to explore that we hadn't had the time to see in the past, like the Monk's Trail and motorcycling north along the Ping River. Go now! It will only get more crowded in the future.

Plenty to see in Chaing Mai.
Plenty to see in Chaing Mai. Flower festival and light show is free. Lots of markets restaurants cafes and temples. Nice park The national parks surrounding are stunning. We visited one of the elephant sanctuary and enjoyed the time there. Shopping centers everywhere. Airport very close to the city. Grab was the best way to get around for us.
