Constant harassment all over, wherever you walk. You are just a walking ATM to these people. When I criticized the ludicrously inflated prices to one not so fine bazaar salesman, he started following me, grabbed my daypack from behind and slurred the f-word to me. I was also called ugly and of course a racist by other destitute merchants. Besides the unscrupulous souk merchants, there is abundancy of con men or con boys who lie to you that the road ahead is blocked or you are not allowed to enter some area. Their one and only goal is to extract money from you for their "help". They get very angry and aggressive when you make clear you know about their agenda and tricks. Odors of human urine and feces and of course smell of a certain smoked substance all around you. I made an informed decision to spend money strictly and only on accommodation, daily nutrition and public transport in this city. I would not buy anything from the souk. Not in a million years, and not after that. I would not ride a taxicab in this city - not in a million years, and not after that. I can only imagine how rife robberies and pickpocketing would be if alcohol consumption was tolerated here like in most tourist destinations around the world. Look around: most windows have metal bars, like in prison cells. That tells enough of the society and mentality here. The best thing in Marrakesh was the airport - I could get out swiftly back to the first world. On my way to the airport I saw a traffic accident scene with a body of a victim under a lamp post. That was quite a goodbye that stays in my mind.
People are so helpful. Fresh fruit juices specially oranges and pomegranate are very nice. We are family of 5 people ( 2 adults and 3 children ) feel so safe. I booked Agafay Desert trip from booking.com and it was so nice, my kids really enjoyed.
Great city, lots of activities to do and places to visit. The people were very nice and always willing to help. There are too many beggars on the streets but the trip was an overall success and great experience.
Spending 3 days in Marrakech is the perfect amount of time. I visited Jardin Majorelle, Yves-Saint Laurent Museum, Madrasa Ben Youssef and the Souks. Jardin Majorelle is a must-visit, the garden has a wide variety of cacti and trees from around the world and it is kept very clean with a lot of security personnel going around. The Musee Pierre Berge des Arts Berbers inside the garden is also a must-visit, it explains the Berber people's history who came from the Atlas mountains. We stayed 1 night at Riad Palais Calipau and 3 nights are Riad Agathe and Spa, both were excellent however I would pick Riad Agathe and Spa everything was perfect. The Souks were a nice way to immerse yourself in the Moroccan culture and they are worth a visit.
Marrakesh is one big tourist trap, if you embrace it, just enjoy the lovely hospitality. You can haggle like the best of them, but in the end, the shopkeepers still win the game. Take some day trips to get out of the city and into the nearby mts and and desert.
Favorite sights: Bahia Palace, Musee des Confluences. Central square - Jemaa El-Fnaa - wild scene in the evening - street musicians, fortune tellers, etc. Narrow, winding passageways in the Media are fascinating, but crowded in late afternoon.
