Ushuaia is an amazing little city..it was so much bigger than we had expected! There are tons of souvenir shops, stores, restaurants, and tour operators in the area. The views of the mountains and the Beagle Channel span every where you look. It's breathtaking! It's a very walkable city as well. Our favorite spots to eat were the Patagonia Brewery, Casimiro Bigua, Bodegon Fuenguino. Special shout out to Dublin Pub for some good drinks and fun ambiance! We took a tour of the Beagle Channel and saw tons of wildlife. We also did a guided hike through Tierra del Fuego and rode the End of the World train. There's so much more to do there..we wish we had more time! Loved it all!
Pictures do not do Ushuaia justice, and I had seen many pictures before. I could stay here and have plenty of options for things to do if my time allowed. We are already planning our return trip! Whether you love large areas of open water, alpine mountain scenes, wildlife viewing or local trinket shopping, it is all available here. Driving is an interesting experience with lots of hills and people who seem to drive as they wish, but once you adapt it isn't bad. Lots of places are closed for siesta/afternoon break (1-4 PM) so plan accordingly. Also, if renting a car be aware that there is a "Guarantia" that is separate from your normal rental fees and insurance that is charged to your credit card when you pick up your car. This was our first time renting a car in the country and were surprised when we found that we would have an extra charge of over $1000 USD to cover at the counter, just a heads up as guarantia is due at pickup and will be a $1000-1500 USD deposit on your card that doesn't show in your original booking.
A stark and barren landscape between the mountains and the sea. Breathtaking vistas. The food options are excellent including the infamous Spider crab in Il Viejo Marino. Be prepared to queue. A unique place to visit.
Beautiful scenery with mountains, lakes, parks, and a bucket list destination. Recommend avoiding the Tren al Fin del Mundo. It's not worth the time or money. It's an expensive short train ride and overall a pretty lame experience. You must also purchase the entry ticket ($40USD pp) to the park, but the train only stops there for a few minutes. Get a ride or walk to the base of the Martial Glacier trail. The hike up is nice and it's beautiful.
Best part about Ushuaia is its proximity to nature. The backdrop is towering snow-capped mountains. Tierra del Fuego National Park is an absolutely amazing place.. a treasure not to be missed. Cerro Martial is also a great hiking area. If you are thinking about renting a car, reserve well in advance. I wanted to rent a car without a reservation but every car rental place had nothing available. One wouldn't think this would be the case, but as the gateway to Antarctica, there is a surprising number of tourists in this small town. As it turned out, not renting a car saved me a lot of money. Taking the bus, Uber or a taxi was much cheaper and got me where I wanted to go. Wasn't impressed with any of the restaurants in town. Too much red meat, cheese and white bread. Blech! No fast casual or grab and go places to get a healthy sandwich, power bar or juice to take with you on a hike. Lots of sugary sweets or sugary baked goods. There was, however, several seafood places in town I didn't try. Anyway, you don't come here for the cuisine.
Ushuaia is a very beautiful city, but also a very expensive one! The activities will depend on the weather. In the city itself the activities are not very visible. We did a boat tour on the Beagle Channel. It was a very good tour. I wish I could have spent at least one more hour on the bridge island, to enjoy the beautiful flora. I was happy to have a very good guide, who was able to suggest me some other tours as well. We also did a 4X4 Jeep ride. That was OK! Nothing special if you are already acquainted with out-door.
