“My home city of Keelung is known for its frequent shifts in weather,” explains Damon Hsieh, who goes by Damon Xart on Behance. “This is where I fell in love with colors — the light blue ocean, the rainbows after the rain. The range of natural weather changes are, more than anything else, my source of inspiration.”

Damon, from Keelung in Taiwan, is an award winning digital artist who specializes in creating captivating gradient visualization for global brands like Apple, Xiaomi, Adobe, and more. You may also recognize his work from the Behance Pro page.

In 2019, Damon began working as an art designer and art director for a motion design company, specializing in projects related to gradient colors. In 2021, Damon began creating personal art pieces in earnest, using Illustrator and Photoshop to further explore the blending of colors and shapes.

Dedicating time and effort to his personal projects has helped Damon establish a strong and distinctive creative voice. “Over the past couple of years, I feel I've gradually developed my own style, navigating between abstraction and representation,” he explains. “I use color to convey emotion, meaning, dynamics, and storytelling in my art.”

Spectral Gradient and Glass Reflection are among Damon’s favorite projects on Behance. “These two projects best represent my personal style over the past two years, from my initial exploration in a 2D style to the presentation in 3D rendering. Whatever software I use, it’s important for me to create work that belong uniquely to me, within my own artistic framework.”

Recently, Damon was commissioned by the Adobe Substance 3D team to create a piece of artwork leveraging the Substance 3D asset library, a collection of thousands of materials, models, and lights designed to help 3D artists and designers realize their creative vision.

While Damon is experienced in creating 3D artwork using tools like Cinema 4D and illustrator, this project was his first time working with the Substance ecosystem.

With a highly flexible brief, Damon began to consider what the Substance toolset could bring to his 2D-heavy workflow. “As I typically work with 2D textures and styles, I very much wanted to incorporate the use of realistic textures to complement my geometric style,” he explains.

“I felt that the combination of realistic textures and 2D gradients would be fantastic. So I created intricate objects, and also downloaded a variety of models from Substance 3D Assets to make my visual creations more direct and efficient.”

“After this, I cut my objects and applied textures to each object and painted in gradient colors using Substance 3D Painter.” After continually experimenting with the variety of material from the Substance 3D assets library, Damon also used Substance 3D stager to compose his layout and set the lighting. “The Substance ecosystem has an easy-to-use UI design and similar usage habits and connectivity with other Adobe software, making it very intuitive for beginners to use,” he reflects about his creative process.
