About the BCMB

The Beverage Container Management Board (BCMB) is the regulatory authority for beverage container recycling in Alberta. Established as a management board under Alberta’s Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA), the BCMB is also a not-for-profit organization. The BCMB leads the development of policy and programs that enables the collection and recycling of beverage containers within Alberta.

About the position

The BCMB is currently looking for one (1) temporary Manager of Governance for an approximate 12 to 15-month period to join our Edmonton-based team. Salary within the advertised range will be based on experience and qualifications.

The Manager of Governance works closely with the President, the Board of Directors and the Director of Communications to achieve the BCMB’s organizational goals. This position coordinates and administers activities related to the Board of Directors and the President, including Board and industry committees. Key responsibilities include Board administration, governance oversight and management, event planning, and research, report, and presentation preparation. The Manager of Governance works with the Director of Communications to execute internal and external communications strategies and projects. In addition, this position provides direct assistance to the President as required and supports staff directors with the organization of action items, statistical reporting, and access to and organization of information.

This position operates in a flexible work arrangement as a combination of remote and in-office work environments.

Overview of Duties and Responsibilities:

A. President Support

  • Preparation of briefing notes for review,
  • Drafting and coordinating by-law and policy amendments,
  • Organize and disseminate information and tracking data,
  • Schedule meetings with various internal and external stakeholders,
  • Prepare meeting agendas, and
  • Manage and maintain multiple calendars, deadlines, action items and workflows.

B. Board, Committee and Industry Support

  • Review and maintain the Board Governance Manual and bring forward recommendations to establish better governance (as required),
  • Administer Board Governance on behalf of the President and track/report findings on acknowledgements, survey results and evaluations, Director profiles, materials and attendance,
  • Manage Board Director terms and requests for nominations from stakeholder groups.
  • Prepare and coordinate briefing notes, reports and research on topics for submission and presentation to the Board of Directors, committees, and stakeholders,
  • Schedule, coordinate and attend board and committee meetings for internal and external stakeholders,
  • Preparation of meeting materials, including agendas, information packages, meeting minutes and meeting summary reports to stakeholders,
  • Organize industry events including Annual General Meeting, Business Planning Session, multi-day events, joint stakeholder board meetings and other such events,
  • Training and cross training of new staff (as required), and
  • Act as a representative of the BCMB at external events.

C.  Communications/Access to Information

  • Communication and workflow coordination with stakeholders, legal counsel and Government of Alberta as required,
  • Work with the Director of Communications to draft notices, letters, news releases, reports, speeches, etc. and coordinate action items from the communications and education strategy.
  • Maintain the BCMB website including reviewing/creating content and updates and work with the website developer to fix issues,
  • Prepare or review, post and circulate notices to industry,
  • Maintain Handling Commission Review Records, accept and respond to submitted materials and requests for access/confidentiality of materials.

 D.  Office and Project Support

  • Participate on internal and industry-wide working committees (as required),
  • Draft or review Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs),
  • Respond to telephone or email inquiries, field calls, takes messages and delegate follow-ups as needed.

Qualifications:

The role requires a minimum of a post-secondary degree from an accredited community college or university.   The Manager of Governance would preferably have 3-5 years’ experience in providing governance and administrative support to senior management.  Equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience may be considered.


Requirements:

  • Computer proficiency, with working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, and PowerPoint) and Internet Web Browser.
  • Understanding of by-law and regulatory policy development.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to work with deadlines with minimal supervision and in a decisive manner.
  • Ability to work proactively and within deadlines.
  • Self-motivated, with ability to work in a team environment.
  • Maintaining records and dissemination of information appropriately.
  • Experience with non-profits, boards, and communicating with multiple stakeholder groups.
  • Occasional travel is required (Valid Class 5 Operators License and reliable vehicle).

  • Project Management.
  • Experience managing virtual platforms.
