The institute offers extensive opportunities to participate in learning opportunities and policy engagement — including student internships, graduate degree programs, and research assistantships.
Internships
The Baker Institute offers internships to actively-enrolled Rice undergraduate and graduate students.
Baker Institute student interns gain valuable experience supporting world class policy research and programming on the most critical issues facing Texas, the U.S., and the world.
Baker Institute student interns work directly with fellows, scholars, and senior staff to support the institute’s mission. Students are hired on an as-needed basis in open roles supporting administration and policy research. During the academic year, Rice student interns are eligible to work up to 15 hours per week.
Baker Institute Administrative Internships support the institute's operations in Finance, Events, Communications, Development, and the Director's Office. Typical duties include event management, budget reconciliation, marketing, editorial assistance, media operations, and podcast production. Baker Institute Policy Internships support the institute's fellows and scholars across the many areas of research covered by our Centers and Programs. Summer in D.C. Internship Program
Undergraduate students can apply for a summer internship in Washington D.C. to gain policy experience at government agencies and NGOs in the nation's capital.
Professional Graduate Programs
Master of Global Affairs
The Master of Global Affairs Program, co-sponsored by the Baker Institute and Rice’s School of Social Sciences, integrates scholarship and practical training for global policymaking. The MGA is a full-time professional master's degree and students may expect to complete the program in two years.
Master of Energy Economics
Developed by the Baker Institute Center for Energy Studies and Rice’s Economics Department, the one-year Master of Energy Economics Program builds skills in energy market analysis to prepare graduates for leadership roles in the energy sector.
