Two officers from Ireland’s newly formed secret police are here to interrogate her husband, a trade unionist. Ireland is falling apart. The country is in the grip of a government turning towards tyranny and when her husband disappears, Eilish finds herself caught within the nightmare logic of a society that is quickly unravelling. A Haunting Tale
Reviewed: 04-03-24
It is distrubing story of authoritarianism, rebellion and common people caught in between. A haunting tale of a mother with children ranging from a young child barely a toddler to a young adult. She is trying to do the best for the remaining after losing her husband and her eldest to the conflict.
At times it reads like poetry, the description of emotions and conflicting thoughts is vivid and gripping. I liked the book but also found it very disturbing, a world far away from the safe and predictable one that one is familiar with.

E. H. Gombrich's world history, an international best seller now available in English for the first time, is a text dominated not by dates and facts but by the sweep of experience across the centuries, a guide to humanity's achievements, and an acute witness to its frailties.

History made interesting.
Reviewed: 06-02-23
This delightful book narrates the history of the world from antiquity to the 1980s. It is Eurocentric with some chapters devoted to China and India. One of the major themes of the book is how much of our history is linked to greed and violence. Repeating in cycles through the ages.
There are little editorial nuggets in every chapter that are a delight. The author also does not pull any punches when talking about the underlying reasons for historic events.
This is as much a book of world history as it is a reminder that the human species is possibly the most violent on the planet.

Recounted as a dream, this is a fable about Mahaparbat, the Living Mountain; the indigenous valley dwellers who live and prosper in its shelter; the assault on the mountain for commercial benefit by the Anthropoi, humans whose sole aim is to reap the bounty of nature; and the disaster that unfolds as a result.

A very powerful fable. As I listened to the audio book the history of the world and the history of science technology and economics seemed to unravel. The cost of progress as have known since the industrial revolution is laid bare.

Are we deranged? The acclaimed Indian novelist Amitav Ghosh argues that future generations may well think so. How else to explain our imaginative failure in the face of global warming? In his first major book of nonfiction since In an Antique Land, Ghosh examines our inability - at the level of literature, history, and politics - to grasp the scale and violence of climate change.

Critical view of the response to climate change. It illustrates to a lay person the complexity of the social economic and political forces aligned and opposed to any intervention. I have rarely come across a more lucid exposition. An underlying theme is the impact or the lack of impact of climate change on the Arts in general and literature in particular.

Neuroscientist V. S. Ramachandran is internationally renowned for uncovering answers to the deep and quirky questions of human nature that few scientists have dared to address. His bold insights about the brain are matched only by the stunning simplicity of his experiments - using such low-tech tools such as cotton swabs, glasses of water, and dime-store mirrors.

Story
Jungle Nama is Amitav Ghosh's verse adaptation of an episode from the legend of Bon Bibi, a tale popular in the villages of the Sundarban, which also lies at the heart of the novel The Hungry Tide. It is the story of the avaricious rich merchant Dhona, the poor lad Dukhey, and his mother; it is also the story of Dokkhin Rai, a mighty spirit who appears to humans as a tiger, of Bon Bibi, the benign goddess of the forest, and her warrior brother, Shah Jongoli.

Story
Sleep is one of the most important aspects of our life, health and longevity and yet it is increasingly neglected in 21st century society, with devastating consequences: every major disease in the developed world - Alzheimer's, cancer, obesity, diabetes - has very strong causal links to deficient sleep. Until very recently, science had no answer to the question of why we sleep, or what good it served, or why its absence is so damaging to our health. Compared to the other basic drives in life - eating, drinking and reproducing - the purpose of sleep remained elusive.

The Anarchy tells the remarkable story of how one of the world’s most magnificent empires disintegrated and came to be replaced by a dangerously unregulated private company, based thousands of miles overseas in one small office, five windows wide, and answerable only to its distant shareholders. In his most ambitious and riveting audiobook to date, William Dalrymple tells the story of the East India Company as it has never been told before, unfolding a timely cautionary tale of the first global corporate power.

Story
Two Harvard professors explain the dangerous world we face today. Democracies can die with a coup d'état - or they can die slowly. This happens most deceptively when in piecemeal fashion, with the election of an authoritarian leader, the abuse of governmental power and the complete repression of opposition. All three steps are being taken around the world - not least with the election of Donald Trump - and we must all understand how we can stop them.
