Story
Who really creates wealth in our world? And how do we decide the value of what they do? At the heart of today's financial and economic crisis is a problem hiding in plain sight. In modern capitalism, value extraction is rewarded more highly than value creation: the productive process that drives a healthy economy and society. From companies driven solely to maximise shareholder value to astronomically high prices of medicines justified through big pharma's 'value pricing', we misidentify taking with making, and have lost sight of what value really means.

Fantastic narration of an incredible book.
Reviewed: 24-07-21
It's long read at 11 hrs at normal speed but worth every minute. I have been meaning to read the book for the last couple of years but never really got the time. The narration is clear and superb, and the scholarship incredible. Mariana Mazzucato is a super star economist and one of the most sane voices of the current generation of economics.

Story
With growing academic responsibilities, family commitments, and inboxes, scholars are struggling to fulfill their writing goals. A finished book - or even steady journal articles - may seem like an impossible dream. But, as Joli Jensen proves, it really is possible to write happily and productively in academe. Jensen begins by busting the myth that universities are supportive writing environments. She points out that academia, an arena dedicated to scholarship, offers pressures that actually prevent scholarly writing.

I recommend this book to all writers - whether stuck or unstuck. Spread evenly across 5 parts and 28 (!) chapters, it is certainly long and requires patience but that's true of the writing process itself. I heard it over a month. The narration is fantastic and the voice and pitch soothing and perfect. The only thing I wished for was an additional pdf with few exercises. Although, given the practical suggestions built into the book, I sort of understand why that was skipped. Wishing for many more from the author.

Story
Conservationist Rachel Carson spent over six years documenting the effects on DDT, a synthetic organic compound used as an insecticide, on numerous communities. Her analysis revealed that such powerful, persistent chemical pesticides have been used without a full understanding of the extent of their potential harm to the whole biota, including the damage they've caused to wildlife, birds, bees, agricultural animals, domestic pets, and even humans. An instant best seller that was read by President Kennedy during the summer of 1962, this classic remains one of the best introductions to the complicated and controversial subject.

Fantastic narration of a fantastic work

Reading this in 2021 and I am struck by the eloquence and poetry of RC and the relevance of the topic. It seems more important than ever to revisit such works so that we could do a lot better than we have when it comes to issues of environment. One aspect that we can think through is thinking of environmental justice via social justice lens. Matters of race and gender are not discussed and still, there is no denying the mastery of the author. Narrated wonderfully, I listened at 1 speed levels but only towards the end : but the book is worth every second one spends on it!!

Fantastic book and wonderfully performed!!

I have seldom come across books that I slowly fall in love with. I either love and dislike instantly but this was an exception. I wasn't sure about the book for a really long time but once I made it through the first couple of chapters, it was fantastic. Brittany is such a phenomenal narrator. The book is essentially a therapists therapy and therefore full of wonderful quirky people and really empathetic. The one issue I had was the varying lengths of the chapters, I wished there had been more of a uniformity to it. But that is trivial compared to the content and performance.(I know I have mentioned it enough, but trust me Brittany's just that good) It is the story of Lori, John, Charlotte, Julie and Rita. Very different people with very different stories and yet deeply engaging issues of sickness, loneliness, death, unhappiness and isolation. Lorie being a former writer on the show is certainly evident in the dramatic tone but I don't think it feels out of place even once. Definitely recommend that you try it out.

Exceptionally insightful conversations.

I absolutely loved listening to the six episodes of Awkward conversations. The topics are very sensitive and ring very authentic and genuine. I am glad confidentiality was maintained because honestly, these conversations are seldom possible in real life. The episodes range from money and habits about money wrt social spending to housing to death. I hope there will be follow up on these because we definitely need to keep the conversation going.

Story
In her new audiobook, Invisible Women, award-winning campaigner and writer Caroline Criado Perez shows us how, in a world largely built for and by men, we are systematically ignoring half the population. She exposes the gender data gap - a gap in our knowledge that is at the root of perpetual, systemic discrimination against women and that has created a pervasive but invisible bias with a profound effect on women’s lives.

I had been looking forward to this getting a hard copy of the book, initially but eventually decided to read it through Audible. I have to say it's simply AWESOME!! There is ameticulous attention paid to data, combined with narrative that just evoke the strongest feeling!! I could get through only one chapter a day due to so much facts being packed into every chapter and I feel that is the right way to read through this book. Thoroughly enjoyed the narration of the author and I hope to see this as a textbook for undergraduates across all disciplines across the world. Another thing I loved was how data across almost all continents was presented.
