A brilliant investigative narrative: How six average Soviet men rose to the pinnacle of Russia's battered economy. David Hoffman, former Moscow bureau chief for
The Washington Post, sheds light onto the hidden lives of Russia's most feared power brokers: the oligarchs. Focusing on six of these ruthless men Hoffman reveals how a few players managed to take over Russia's cash-strapped economy and then divvy it up in loans-for-shares deals.

full of interesting details on the individual careers and collective dynamics of those who organized the capture of russia's assets during the privatisations under Yeltsin. Largely, and strikingly told in a sympathetic tone by a journalist who clearly feels less sympathy for the russian population and its plight. The implications of that sympathy are deeply troubling, but the book is of great substance.

Our capital city has always been a thriving and colorful place, full of diverse and determined individuals developing trade and finance, exchanging gossip and doing business. Abandoned by the Romans, rebuilt by the Saxons, occupied by the Vikings and reconstructed by the Normans, London would become the largest trade and financial center, dominating the world in later centuries. London has always been a brilliant, vibrant, and eclectic place.

In a wonderfully british accent are described centuries worth of that city's popular habits and passions, social customs and odd fashions. A book that can probably be read or listened to a second time with great pleasure and benefit.

Over 5,000 years, India has been home to a rich tapestry of peoples and cultures. Two of the world's great religions - Hinduism and Buddhism - have their origins in South Asia, and the lands east of the Indus River have long been a central hub for trade, migration, and cultural exchange. Today the subcontinent contains 20 percent of the world's population and is a thriving center for global business, making this region one of most significant economic powerhouses in the world.

Too many kings and the likes, too much discussion of actually uninteresting charismatic figures, almost no true discussion of indian culture (lifestyles and social norms, community structures, crafts and arts, business...)

A dazzling new history of the modern world, as told through the remarkable story of population change. Every phase since the advent of the industrial revolution - from the fate of the British Empire, to the global challenges from Germany, Japan and Russia, to America's emergence as a sole superpower, to the Arab Spring, to the long-term decline of economic growth that started with Japan and has now spread to Europe, to China's meteoric economy, to Brexit and the presidency of Donald Trump - can be explained better when we appreciate the meaning of demographic change across the world.

Histoire
For most of its 5,000-year existence, China has been the largest, most populous, wealthiest, and mightiest nation on Earth. And for us as Westerners, it is essential to understand where China has been in order to anticipate its future. These 36 eye-opening lectures deliver a comprehensive political and historical overview of one of the most fascinating and complex countries in world history. You'll learn about the powerful dynasties that ruled China for centuries; the philosophical and religious foundations-particularly Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism-that have influenced every iteration of Chinese thought, and the larger-than-life personalities, from both inside and outside its borders, of those who have shaped China's history. As you listen to these lectures, you'll see how China's politics, economics, and art reflect the forces of its past. From the "Mandate of Heaven," a theory of social contract in place by 1500 B.C.E., 3,000 years before Western philosophers such as Thomas Hobbes and John Locke, to the development of agriculture and writing independent of outside influence to the technologically-advanced Han Dynasty during the time of the Roman Empire, this course takes you on a journey across ground that has been largely unexplored in the history courses most of us in the West have taken. In guiding you through the five millennia of China's history, Professor Hammond tells a fascinating story with an immense scope, a welcome reminder that China is no stranger to that stage and, indeed, has more often than not been the most extraordinary player on it.

Mediocre. Old guard author
Rédigé le : 09/09/2023
Bizarre praise of an empire that did little to evolve in many centuries and would still have a stagnant view of the world were it not for its rough contacts with more restless nations. And bizarrely largely sympathetic depiction of a sregime that to this day holds its own population under a tight grip. If anything, This book manifests the very own cultural and political exhaustion of the occidental world that produces it. And how does a 21st century mind determine they should bother and describe the endless succession of dynasties and their largely uninteresting leaders and a handful of more or less interesting thinkers to a public composed of industrious and often highly qualified 21st century women and men to introduce "china" to them? Rather than, say, a history of chinese lives, family and community structures, health and entertainment , homes, arts, beliefs, urban environments, industries and techniques, business practices and organizations (with some data sprinkled throughout maybe ?) ? What a mediocre, lazy intellectual world we have, both formidably indulgent and toxic.

As a sequel to European Thought and Culture in the 19th Century, Professor Kramer tackles the major intellectual themes and debates that decisively shaped 20th-century European culture. These 24 lectures cover an amazingly wide range of thinkers and writers, the key historical circumstances and challenges they faced, and the fascinating and subtle ways in which their works relate to one another and to the larger story of modern European culture.

intellectualism is provincial, and blind
Rédigé le : 14/09/2021
read the description : it is not european culture and thought, but a chunk of 20th century european progressive intellectual(ist) thought, that fraction which hasn't turned so dark as to have to be pushed under the carpet, mixed with a little progressive-aligned arts and litterature, which are presented. In that referential, the lectures are pretty good. Though the catastrophies of progressive thought in the 20th century aren't the object of any overt discussion here, or anywhere else for that matter. The evolution of political thought, organization and institutions, most of the arts, the evolution of sciences, of business, work and consumer culture, and the massive cultural impact of globalisation are but evoqued here. Expect some freud, some lacan, some beauvoir and some critical theory. Nothing on the sciences of our origins, of our brains and cognition, of our universes' structure, but an inept reference to Einstein's relativity; nothing on the evolution of an enormous corporate world's culture, and the evolution of an even more enormous world of state and public administrations, on the explosive development of a legal culture framing every aspect of an individual's life, from family to education, work or housing, or on the telecommunications and computing transformations, or on the evolution of the place of arts and entertainment in our lives. It is all about a narrow, largely self-centered intellectualism.

while the ambition of the book is great, there's little in the contents that matches the expectations created. Instead of insights, reasonings, facts and references, one finds in this book quantities of assessments generously distributed by the author.

Histoire
In The Black Swan Taleb outlined a problem, and in Antifragile he offers a definitive solution: how to gain from disorder and chaos while being protected from fragilities and adverse events. For what Taleb calls the "antifragile" is actually beyond the robust, because it benefits from shocks, uncertainty, and stressors, just as human bones get stronger when subjected to stress and tension. The antifragile needs disorder in order to survive and flourish. Taleb stands uncertainty on its head, making it desirable, even necessary, and proposes that things be built in an antifragile manner.

very substantial, though anglo-saxon biased
Rédigé le : 09/01/2021
lots of info in there to build a general picture of the past two centuries and a half of innovation and industry. BUT spectacularly biased towards a systematic overvalorisation of british and then american innovation and industry, making it sound like they did 95% of the work. AND science is not really understood here to be part of the story, which is absurd. Still a very good audiobook.
