Good, but not as Lovecraftian as I'd hoped.

I liked the excellent buildup, the likeable characters and the time spent on developing their relationships. I also liked the cosmic horror aspect, but it was too...let's call it blunt. Nothing unfathomable and madness inducing as you would expect from the genre. That's all I'm gonna say, as I don't want to spoil the story that's definitely worth a listen.
The narrator's performance is outstanding. Ray Porter is a master at what he does.

Mind blowing mystery, masterfully narrated

The story and the reading are both amazing. There's a cast of quirky and interesting characters, all brought to live by Ray Porter giving them their own voices and speech patterns. And the world building is simply amazing.

mir hat eigentlich alles gefallen. Selbst nach dem zweiten mal hören hat es die Spannung nicht verloren.

2nd time through

It's ... an unusual book. Yes it's filled with murder, gore and plottwists. But it's although heavy on the realistic side of the characters daily lifes. You follow the main character for a few months of his life. His move into a new Apartment. His braindead work, the after work beers on the weekend. Yet it's still mostly a mystery detective story. Clues are found and waited to be solved. A loose group is forming around our main char. And step by step between workshifts it goes deep down the rabbithole.

As you can tell I love the book. Fell in love with the characters and details. Its slow pace is relaxing for me. But still really entertaining. Looking forward to my future readings of this outstanding piece of art!

Robert Porter did an amazing job on the narration, the story was well delivered and entertaining throughout, sad its finished 😢, I'm buying the fold next II have high hopes 🙂 honestly if you like fiction and Sci fi you'll lap this right up it,

An Interesting Take on Lovecraftian Mystery

At the core of 14 lies a great idea. I won't spoil the fun by revealing the mystery. Around its ingenious framework the execution is mostly well done, but sometimes feels a bit flat. The characters are a little too innocent, and a bit too witty in their banter. However, I personally did not find the witticisms so jarring that they failed their job of lightening the mood and increasing my investment in the characters. I would recommend this to any fans of the lovecraftian horror/mystery structure of a "big reveal" tale.

As for the reading; Ray Porter does a very solid job of narrating Clines' story and giving each character a unique voice. My only complaints are that he overdid with the accent of a female protagonist and sometimes, the most random times, sounded like he "zoned out" for a few seconds and was listing words, rather than reading a story. However, these are minor complaints, and I prefer his slightly inconsistant, yet dynamic style to the grim monotone of some horror recordings.

Meet the tenants and their weird flats - it's fun!

This was exactly as entertaining as I hoped it would be. Got the audiobook because the actual book is (at least at the moment) extremely hard to get, and I wasn't disappointed. Ok, I saw the twists and turns coming from a mile away, but then I read a ton of horror and sci-fi and am not easily surprised. Nevertheless, the story is compelling, the characters well written. The only thing I didn't like were the female voices by the narrator. To me they all sounded alike: either breathless and whiny or unreasonably annoyed. But of course it isn't easy giving such a big cast different voices, and overall I enjoyed the performance.

Just meh

The characters are kinda hollow and the women feel like they were written by a very horny dude. The mystery would be infinitely better if characters had more of a motivation than "Guess we got nothing better to do".
