Maconie rambles through England in the venerable footsteps of J.B. Priestley, chatting to locals and giving vent to his opinions and prejudices, most of which with some exceptions I would be happy to share. He discovers some interesting pubs, shops and restaurants, together with a number of places which are less salubrious, and overall his account of his insights and experiences makes an enjoyable listen!

An expertly-crafted crime story

The fact that D.S. Cross has Asperger"s syndrome means that he has no social skills and has difficulty interpreting the beviour of other people. He is infuriating to those who have to work with him and baffling to the criminals he has to deal with, but his doggedness and insights create results. And just when you think the case has been wrapped up, there is a cunning twist!

Bunny with and without Maggie

The ideal introduction for those new to the phenomenon that is to Bunny McGarry, and an enjoyable supplement to everyone who already knows the "big fella" from Caimh McDonnell"s other novels. Bunny appears in nearly all McDonnell"s series except for the "Stranger Times" stories and is - along with characters like Jim Dixon and the Ginger Man - one of the most memorable personalities of modern comic fiction. Maggie, however, is an Alsatian ex-police dog with entirely her own identity and claim to literary fame.

Are there no honest people left?

This is one of the best of the Bernie Günther novels, and also one of the most sombre! Hardly any of the protagonists comes out of the dark world of post-war Germany with any honour, but in spite of all the pessimism the story heads towards a coherent conclusion.

A kind of hidden gem

The first few pages give the impression of a slightly wooden style, but don"t be fooled by this. Detective Sergeant Cross is a distinctive character and the plot of the novel is well worth following. I will be checking out the remaining books in the series.

Definitely the year"s best audiobook so far

Let"s start with the most crucial aspect of any audiobook: the reading. Dominic Hoffmann handles the dialogues and descriptions with great skill and with empathy for the characters in all their diversity. The story itself unfolds without any hurry and builds up an absorbing picture of the projects where the action takes place and a distinctive cast of protagonists with even more memorable nicknames. There is humour, gangster violence, home-made alcohol, the stirrings of love and even a mysterious statuette of a goddess dating back to the Paleolithic era - all the threads that are developed individually in the narration finally come together to create a resoundingly successful listen (or read, of course, although I suggest that the dialogues come to life most vividly in Hoffmann"s narration).

Slough House screwing up again

This one takes a bit of time to get going and you need to pay attention, but the story picks up after a while and let"s face it, Sean Barrett could read instructions from a well-known Swedish manufacturer on how to assemble a flat-pack bookshelf and we would still be riveted. Jackson Lamb is his usual obstreperous self, of course, and does not mellow with time. The rest of the crew are as incompetent as ever but somehow manage to get the job done!

Excellent speaker

As with all the Strike novels, the reading is first class. The content that has to be read, however, is farcical in terms of suitability for an audiobook, because there are passages involving the reading of seemingly never-ending Twitter account threads which leave you wanting to scream and break things. Robert Glenister struggles manfully on, but it"s an uphill task and I gave up halfway in frustration. As a Strike fan I may sooner or later buy the print version, but as a audiobook I"ll have to write this one off to experience.

Sean Duffy in Höchstform

Caveat emptor

Dieser Roman wird jeden ansprechen, der eine Privatdetektivgeschichte gemischt mit Harry Potter-Fantasy sucht. Wenn Sie hingegen eine schlichte Detektivgeschichte oder einen Krimi erwarten, dann ist dies nicht das richtige Buch für Sie, denn es wechselt nahtlos von der Tatortanalyse zu übernatürlichem Geschwafel mit zombieartigen Menschen und einem Atlas, der die Welt verändern will.
