What is the male narrator even doing???

I had already read the book and therefore know the plot. That’s what’s driven me to the decision to stop pushing through this audiobook.

The male narrator seems to constantly repress his actual voice, aiming for “the smouldering hot guy voice”, whatever that may be.

The worst thing is that the female narrator is -in this production- interrupted whenever she talks to him: in Rue’s chapters, the main narrator is female but Eli’s parts of the conversation are read by the male narrator and vice versa.
The sound quality of the two recordings sounds off, thus, the whole dialogue is butchered into oblivion.

Combined with the narrator’s ridiculous, smouldering car crash of a reading voice, this was unlistenable for me.

If I am not mistaken, the same narrator reads the bonus chapter in one of Hazelwood’s earlier books. Same problem there: His pressed “I am Batman”-voice and the dialect sound cheap and uneducated. Not at all like the character who is a university professor.

…and the typical Caplin-esque quirkiness to the endearing characters.
Beautiful narration with the accents, too.
Full immersion, through and through.
The wanderlust kicking in once more.

Wonderful deep dive into the Danish way of hygge. The characters were refreshing and dear, the narrator has a nice voice that’s warm and a bit husky.

Only the men‘s voices needed a bit of getting used to -at times, they rather sounded like pompous bullfrogs to me.

This book made me want to visit Iceland even more than I already did before.
The descriptions of the landscape and weather are lovely and detailed.

You also grow very fond of all the quirky characters and their shared wholesome moments.
The building relationship(s) and their intimate moments are also nicely written.

It surely was a “page turner” for me. The story had just the right amount of drama, too. Not overly torturously suspense-packed but keeping you hooked all the same.
There were also very funny moments along the way. I laughed out loud when the sheep bobbed about in the whirlpool.

Only the ending felt a bit off to me but that might be a question of taste…

!! Mild spoiler following !!

Spending so much time at that lovely lodge, I didn’t enjoy the change of location which felt abrupt and slightly halfhearted.

While I perceived the story to be a bit constructed, I enjoyed the overall experience.
Ali Hazelwood stayed true to form even though I needed some time to become invested in the plot.

The narrator bugged me a bit, at first: She sounded singsang-y to me, like some of those cliché poetry slammers do. It’s a question of taste, supposedly. But along the line, her narration grew on me. Especially the different voices were acted out nicely.

The author displays a great ability to build characters and writes them well. They are deep and authentic.
My problem with this book was simply that I found the main character
UNBEARABLE.

It is really hard to stick around if you don’t like the lead, but I managed. The last hour of the book had some redeeming sort of outlook. The way to get there however… wow. So annoying!

That constant stream of consciousness, walking in circles, nay, spirals!
I get it, the main character is going through tough stages of grief and loss. She’s struggling with finding her way back to being a functioning member of society after her unspectacular separation from her husband. But does it really need to take up 95% of the book to describe every recursive, self-centred, oh-so-quirky thought of hers??

Even though Julia Whelan performs in her usual awesome way, her full, lush, luxurious voice and intonation cannot make up for this odyssey. I love listening to her audio books but with this book, there were just too many instances where I wanted to yell: “just shut up already”.

At times, I thought that this book was more intended as a guide for people struggling with divorce. Like it was saying “Hang in there, others are not getting better either”. Not being in this particular situation at the moment, I could hardly take anything away from this audio experience even though I usually enjoy different stories and points of view.

…then this is your book.
It follows the hate to love routine.

It is not really deep or has a surprising plot twist that couldn’t be guessed in advance. But it’s sweet and steamy and just what you need sometimes: Not too much drama, ridiculously polar opposites that attract (tiny quirky sweet woman, burly Clark Kent guy with brains…) and a good old “first they hate each other but it’s obvious they love each other”-storyline.

This is a heartwarming story with lovely characters and real struggles.
I listened to The Friend Zone first without knowing that the story is continued in this book. I would suggest to anyone who’s interested in listening to The Happy Ever After Playlist to do the same.

The readers are great, too.

Clumsy wording, unnecessary plot detours

I don’t have a problem with foreseeable plots -they are part of the deal in this genre after all.
But this was a bit too much.

Also, I had the feeling that some of the plot was just there to fill pages; unsatisfying and foreseeable misunderstandings and so on.
While other books deal with questions of mental health and self improvement, the childhood trauma the protagonists have to deal with is represented in a very shallow way. The relationships in the story are not properly explored and thus feel hollow and superficial.

And oh my God, find other words than “purple paw prints“! Describing a situation using the same alliteration over and over and over again feels irritating and is just clumsy writing.

Well-written and touching. First, it’s cute and uplifting but gradually develops into a heart-wrenching story about life and treatment choices as a potentially fatal patient.

I came looking for a heart-warming love story which at first, I got. However I wasn’t expecting (or really wanted) all the existential crisis parts of the book.
That might be my fault for not researching properly what I was in for and I still enjoyed the story. It just wasn’t all warm and nice.
