Geschichte
One hundred years ago in Port Arbello a pretty little girl began to scream. And struggle. And die. No one heard. No one saw. Just one man whose guilty heart burst in pain as he dashed himself to death in the sea. Now something peculiar is happening in Port Arbello. The children are disappearing, one by one. An evil history is repeating itself. And one strange, terrified child has ended her silence with a scream that began 100 years ago.

Fiebertraum
Rezensiert am: 25.09.2024
Wow.
Pluspunkt: Hervorragender Sprecher.

Geschichte
Fourteen-year-old Mona isn't like the wizards charged with defending the city. She can't control lightning or speak to water. Her familiar is a sourdough starter, and her magic only works on bread. She has a comfortable life in her aunt's bakery making gingerbread men dance. But Mona's life is turned upside down when she finds a dead body on the bakery floor. An assassin is stalking the streets of Mona's city, preying on magic folk, and it appears that Mona is his next target. And in an embattled city suddenly bereft of wizards, the assassin may be the least of Mona's worries.

Gotta love the gingerbreadman!
Rezensiert am: 18.09.2024
Read the book a couple of months ago and fell in love with this charming story and, of course, the sassy gingerbreadman. And I'm glad I knew the book before I listened to the audiobook, The narrator just wasn't to my liking: it's a weird combination of breathless whispering that didn't fit my imagination of 14-year-old Mona and that imo didn't do justice to the wonderful story. But still a great book, and yes, its main target are teenagers, but you will enjoy this regardless of your age if you like quirky storys with well-written, believable protagonists and badass sidekicks (looking at you, Bob!).

When the Imagine Network commissioned a documentary on mermaids, to be filmed from the cruise ship Atargatis, they expected what they had always received before: an assortment of eyewitness reports that proved nothing, some footage that proved even less, and the kind of ratings that only came from peddling imaginary creatures to the masses.

A nice short trip to the Mariana Trench, including sight-seeing of some mythical beasts. Here's what Arielle really looks like. I bet someone is going to make a movie from this novella.

I'm very glad that I didn't get the book but switched to audiobook. The guest-narrators of the TNG-cast make this a special treat for fans. The story itself... well. A charming idea, but boringly executed. The Lal-plot gets old very fast. I would've liked more insights of interactions on set, told in Spiner's unique funny way.

Childhood horror
Rezensiert am: 22.08.2024
I liked: how accurate the author portraits childhood fears and embarrassments. And the narrator is very good.
But...maybe I've read too much (good) horror, but I just wasn't impressed with the supernatural elements of the story. Sorry, imo not spooky or even suspenseful at all.

Oh horror, where art thou?
Rezensiert am: 22.08.2024
So.... a Scooby-Doo-like gang finds themselves suddenly all grownup with all the grownup problems, gets a last mystery to solve and the protagonist gets eleanored by a house that has read too much Shirley Jackson. Put like that it should be my cup of tea, but it just wasn't. Saw the "twists" coming from a mile away, had not a single fright and wasn't invested in the characters at all. And of course maybe that's just me. Anyway, the narration was great!

Geschichte
For nearly two decades, Jamie Warren has been running from darkness. He's haunted by a traumatic childhood and the guilt at having disappeared from his disabled brother's life. But then a series of unusual events reunites him with his estranged brother and their childhood friends, and none of them can deny the sense of fate that has seemingly drawn them back together. Nor can they deny the memories of that summer, so long ago—the strange magic taught to them by an even stranger man, and the terrible act that has followed them all into adulthood.

Have me met before...?

You have read "It", you have read "Dreamcatcher" - now you know "Black Mouth". Well, sort of, and it isn't necessarily a bad thing. This was my first Malfi book and I get it now, the endless comparisons with King. Black Mouth has all the ingredients most King-Fans love: friendship between young outsiders, love between siblings, the evil in mysterious disguise, the nostalgia for long summers in childhood. And of course the reunion of long lost friends as adults. But as familiar as it feels, in no way is this a rip-off. I liked it a lot, and if you love King you will like this, too. Just don't expect a letsleavethelightsontonightandarethedoorsreallylocked?-type of horrorstory, the spooky elements are imo on the mild side.

Geschichte
Tinker's Cottage nestles in a forgotten corner of deepest Somerset. It also happens to sit on a weak point in the space time continuum...which is somewhat unfortunate for Ian Faulkener, a graphic novelist from London, who was hoping for some peace and quiet in which to recuperate following a very messy breakdown. It was the cats that first alerted Ian to the fact that something was not quite right with Tinker's Cottage...the cats and, of course, the Pope, disappearing literary agents, mislaid handymen and the insanity of Cherie Blair World.

If Douglas Adams had written a cosy screwball comedy-mystery - this would be it. The narration reminded me more than once of Monty Pythons Flying Circus. So all in all: great fun!

Blackwater is the saga of a small town, Perdido, Alabama, and Elinor Dammert, the stranger who arrives there under mysterious circumstances on Easter Sunday, 1919. On the surface, Elinor is gracious, charming, anxious to belong in Perdido, and eager to marry Oscar Caskey, the eldest son of Perdido's first family. But her beautiful exterior hides a shocking secret. Beneath the waters of the Perdido River, she turns into something terrifying, a creature whispered about in stories that have chilled the residents of Perdido for generations.

If you are looking for a horror story, this isn't for you. Yes, there's a sprinkling of supernatural elements here and there, but this isn't about that. I got this because it was recommended to me as a horror book, but even so I wasn't disappointed because it's one of the greatest family stories I ever read. Listened to. Whatever. Fell in love with so many characters... and yes, occasionally I cried.
And the cherry on top is the wonderful narration of Matt Godfrey.
Story and narration are superb. It's that simple.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

Meet the tenants and their weird flats - it's fun!
Rezensiert am: 03.08.2024
This was exactly as entertaining as I hoped it would be. Got the audiobook because the actual book is (at least at the moment) extremely hard to get, and I wasn't disappointed. Ok, I saw the twists and turns coming from a mile away, but then I read a ton of horror and sci-fi and am not easily surprised. Nevertheless, the story is compelling, the characters well written. The only thing I didn't like were the female voices by the narrator. To me they all sounded alike: either breathless and whiny or unreasonably annoyed. But of course it isn't easy giving such a big cast different voices, and overall I enjoyed the performance.
