About this listen

One choice. Two different paths - with stunningly different results. From the bestselling author of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.

At the age of 29, Hannah Martin still has no idea what she wants to do with her life. She has lived in six different cities and held countless meaningless jobs since graduating college. On the heels of leaving yet another city, Hannah moves back to her hometown of Los Angeles and takes up residence in her best friend Gabby’s guestroom. Shortly after getting back to town, Hannah goes out to a bar one night with her friend Gabby and meets up with her high school boyfriend, Ethan.

Just after midnight, Gabby asks Hannah if she’s ready to go. A moment later, Ethan offers to give her a ride later if she wants to stay. Hannah hesitates. What happens if she leaves with Gabby? What happens if she leaves with Ethan?

In concurrent storylines, Hannah lives out the effects of each decision. Quickly, these parallel universes develop into radically different stories with large-scale consequences for Hannah, as well as the people around her. As the two alternate realities run their course, Maybe in Another Life raises questions about fate and love: Is anything meant to be? How much in our life is determined by chance? And perhaps, most compellingly: Is there such a thing as a soul mate?

Hannah believes there is. And, in both worlds, she believes she’s found him.

"Entertaining and unpredictable; Reid makes a compelling argument for happiness in every life." Kirkus (starred review)

good but not great

This was my least favourite Taylor Jenkins Reid book. I didn't think I'd ever rate one of her books a 3 stars but here we are. It just didn't hold my attention like the others have and I didn't like the main character that much.
I did like the ending, not as predictable as I thought it would be. I wasn't sure what guy I was rooting for - Ethan or Henry - and it turned out ok.

A uniquely beautiful story

This was gorgeous! Love the idea that no matter where life takes you it all works out in the end

If life gives you lemons make lemonade

Intriguing premise that insinuates there could be good and bad consequences for life’s decision making. Apparently not. Too sugary sweet for me.

Great story

Great story - similar to the film "Sliding Doors" where a different action in time changes your life trajectory. I enjoyed how most of the main characters were mentioned in both story lines.
I found the stories easy to follow even though they were in alternate chapters.
I'm currently reading another of this author's books and am totally engrossed in it :)

this book is amazing

it us so easy to get lost in both of Hannah's stories and at times you truly don't know which one you wish she was actually in, but one thing is for sure, the relationship between her and Gabby is the real love story. Gabbys Dad is pretty special too

Sliding doors with cinnamon rolls and high buns

The concept of this book was great. A sliding doors retelling where we dive into two alternate universes of Hannah’s life based on one decision: go home or stay at the bar.

I really enjoyed the storyline’s of the book and found the different paths her life took a great read. However there was way too much repetition.

When describing a story or a conversation it was great to have it in full in one life path but seeing we had read it the chapter before when it’s repeated in entirety in the next it’s very much over done. Something that could easily have been referenced.

And oh my gosh if someone mentions the word cinnamon roll or high bun to me I may hit them! What is with authors creating female characters who’s personalities are based around a hairdo and a type of food. It’s annoying and somewhat condescending.

However if you get past the repetition, breakfast pastries and hairstyle requirements. It is a good read into the possibilities life can take you on. And I must say I don’t think after reading it I could choose which life path I would choose for her.

Love the author. Need to change narrator

I love this author’s books. However, after listening to many I feel like there needs to be some variety with the narration. The narrators interpretation of every male character is the same. It is the same even from books she has narrated from other author’s books. Maybe I will need to go back to reading books rather than listening.

Interesting concept

Great premise for a book, overall enjoyed the characters and story. The voice the narrator affected for male characters was off-putting.
