Story
Lily and her ex-husband, Ryle, have just settled into a civil co-parenting rhythm when she suddenly bumps into her first love, Atlas, again. After nearly two years separated, she is elated that for once, time is on their side, and she immediately says yes when Atlas asks her on a date. But her excitement is quickly hampered by the knowledge that, though they are no longer married, Ryle is still very much a part of her life—and Atlas Corrigan is the one man he will hate being in his ex-wife and daughter’s life.

To write an entire book about trauma survivors and have them so unidimensional is a waste of an opportunity. I’m a trauma therapist and work with CPTSD regularly. This could have been a far more informative and interesting book, but it was just sappy romance, so neat and bland it was difficult to finish.

Story
The Manipulator. I can manipulate the emotions of anyone who lets me. I will make you hurt, make you cry, make you laugh and sigh. But my words don't affect him. Especially not when I plead for him to leave. He's always there, watching and waiting. And I can never look away. Not when I want him to come closer. The Shadow. I didn't mean to fall in love. But now that I have, I can't stay away. I'm mesmerized by her smile, by her eyes, and the way she moves. I'll keep watching and waiting. Until I can make her mine. And once she is, I'll never let her go.

I cannot be bothered finishing this. I’m fairly sure I can guess the next 2/3 and the ending. The characters are thoroughly unlikeable and the Adeline’s narrator sounds like a petulant high schooler. I was just irritated and bored while listening and I actually gagged during the sex (..?!) scenes.

I always enjoy an epic tale from Marillier, and this one is no different. I'm writing a review to warn people of the narration. Whoever did Brocc's chapters was perhaps the most annoying narration I've ever endured. I had to speed up his chapters so I wouldn't crack a tooth from clenching my jaw in irritation. There is another version, so I emphatically encourage you to get that one.

Juliet's been in hiding. From her family, from her life, but most of all from the fact that Ben's not around anymore. Her mother, Diane, has run out of advice. But then she insists Juliet look after her elderly Labrador, and it becomes apparent that Coco the dog might actually be the one who can rescue her daughter. Especially when it leads to her walking dogs for a few other locals, too, including a spaniel, Damson, who belongs to a very attractive man.

I listen to Dillon when I need something simple and with a guaranteed happy ending. this one was less ambitious than others, with one of the story arch's being too convenient and easily resolved. Price-lewis is normally good, but someone who could do an Irish accent for Lorkin was really needed.

Story
In this unnamed city, to be interesting is dangerous. Middle sister, our protagonist, is busy attempting to keep her mother from discovering her maybe-boyfriend and to keep everyone in the dark about her encounter with Milkman. But when first brother-in-law sniffs out her struggle, and rumours start to swell, middle sister becomes 'interesting'. The last thing she ever wanted to be. To be interesting is to be noticed and to be noticed is dangerous. Milkman is a tale of gossip and hearsay, silence and deliberate deafness. It is the story of inaction with enormous consequences.

I can see both sides of the reviews, and agree that it would probably be better if read rather than listened to. Once I let go of my frustration with the discursive nature of the writing, it was enjoyable enough.

A real disappointment
Reviewed: 06-03-2020
I saw it through, because I'm such a big fan of Keyes. I hoped that something would happen to improve it, but alas...
it was strange how little the theme of motherhood and parenthood played in this "will he call me? does he like me?" story, that began with a woman being abandoned with a newborn. It was a missed opportunity to add some meat to this young-adult-esq chic lit. Halligan did an admirable job given the content.

I really enjoyed this book (Keyes is always a good read) and she doesn't shy away or trivialise the mental illness angle, but it was the narration that compelled me to write a review. If I could give Daly more than 5 starts, I would. She was pitch perfect, and hilarious. Highly recommend!

I was very close to getting a refund as the first few hours were so slow and the narrator soporific that it was putting me to sleep. I gave it one more chance and I was glad I did, as the premise was unique and the plot became quite gripping towards the end.
