Story
Zachary Ezra Rawlins is a graduate student in Vermont when he discovers a strange book hidden in the library stacks. As he turns the pages, entranced by tales of lovelorn prisoners, key collectors, and nameless acolytes, he reads something strange: a story from his own childhood. Bewildered by this inexplicable book and desperate to make sense of how his own life came to be recorded, Zachary uncovers a series of clues that lead him to a masquerade party in New York, to a secret club, and through a doorway to a subterranean library, hidden far below the surface of the earth.

Overwhelming and underwhelming at the same time…

I was really excited to listen to this after I had read The Night Circus a couple of years before and fallen in love with it. The Starless Sea has all the wonder, magic and atmospheric beauty I was expecting, but its multiple interweaving narratives are both the best and worst thing about it. The first act is appropriately intriguing and lures the reader into the mystery of the story, but does little to reward our patience, attention and tenacity even through 93 chapters and somehow-connected storylines. Even the end leaves out certain elements that would have been so fascinating to explore. I was torn between never wanting the story to end and wondering how much more of it I could take, especially since the readers of this audiobook all manage to have the same vocal cadences and pacing, it’s maddening. The Starless Sea is a masterclass in descriptive writing and has a lot of merit as a concept, but everything else about it is, quite honestly, a darn disappointment.

Story
In this Audible Exclusive production, Academy Award® nominee Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) narrates one of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Sense and Sensibility. In this timeless tale of misguided romance and heartbreak, two teenage heroines must overcome the pitfalls of Georgian England’s high society in order to achieve the love and happiness they seek. The admiration that Pike has for Austen’s work is shown clearly through this passionate delivery of Austen’s first published novel.

Halfway through, can’t stop listening

I never before had the attention span to read any Austen books, and I’m really glad that readings of them are included in the Plus Catalogue. The delivery is smooth and engaging, with good efforts to distinguish different characters’ voices. It’s kind of like I’m sitting down to tea with my girl Rosamund and she’s telling me all about what’s going on with the Dashwoods.

A man awakens, adrift in deep space, with little memory of who he is - only to discover that he is the commander of a space mission; the rest of the crew is gone; and he is apparently a writer of some small renown named Neil Gaiman.

Now this was really something! A short compact story with excellent, personable performances and an unnerving twist. But it’s not about the plot; it’s about the characters.
