Story
This Is Not a Game is the extraordinary untold story of the internet’s first conspiracy theory, the legend of Ong’s Hat. Marc Fennell will dive deep into a previously unexplored world of tech hippies, eccentric web subcultures and simmering paranoia, uncovering how this tongue-in-cheek artistic experiment backfired on its creator and went on to influence much of what’s wrong with the internet today.

This is an amazing tale from the wild frontier of the early days of the internet, told with Fennell’s usual flair. A thoroughly enjoyable listen.

His love for those who society at best ignore and at worse despise raises the spirit and shines a light on the shared human experience of city life.

One week into the COVID-19 shutdown, tenants of a Lower East Side apartment building in Manhattan have begun to gather on the rooftop and tell stories. With each passing night, more and more neighbours gather, bringing chairs and milk crates and overturned pails. Remarkably fresh insights

A *lot* has been written about this chapter in US political history.
This book surprises (although it shouldn’t, considering the author) for its fresh insights into events.
It is obviously deeply sourced and goes well beyond the headlines and trite retelling of events.
Highly recommend.

Story
The January 6th attack is an unprecedented crime in American history. Sprawling and openly political, it can't be handled by the traditional rules and norms of law enforcement—threatening the very idea of justice and its role in society. A mass of online tipsters—"sedition hunters"—have mobilized, simultaneously providing the FBI with valuable intelligence. In this work of extraordinary reportage, Ryan Reilly gets to know would-be revolutionaries, obsessive online sleuths, and FBI agents, and shines a light on a justice system that's straining to maintain order in our polarized country.

This has the makings of a brilliant movie, if it focused more on the individuals who worked to bring people to justice. Probably a little dry for many, with lots of historical detours that while interesting, didn’t add that much to the story.
A nice long listen over the Christmas break.

So bad it’s good

This is what happens when an American visits Australia once, for a week, and decides to base a book there.
The only thing more amazing than the lack of local knowledge (hint, eucalyptus aren’t deciduous, and you’d never hear a local talk about the ‘woods’) is the poor, sweetly enthusiastic narrator’s attempts at Australian and English accents.
Pro-tip: a pickup truck is known as a ute, as in utility.
Not pronounced ‘Oot’.
That was the point I laughed out loud in public and knew I had to see this sweet disaster through.
I imagine the book was written by someone who lives in his mum’s basement and who never played contact sports, let alone served in any capacity, as his knowledge of concussion and physical injury, while enthusiastic, was so unrealistic as to be funny and about as good as his local knowledge.
On the upside, it has amused me for several days, and has me yelling ‘OOT!’ every time I see a Hilux.
