Story
Across the lagoon lies Murano. Time flows differently here – like the glass the island’s maestros spend their lives learning to control. Women are not meant to work with glass, but Orsola Rosso flouts convention to save her family from ruin. She works in secret, knowing her creations must be perfect to be accepted by men. But perfection may take a lifetime. Skipping like a stone through the centuries, we follow Orsola as she hones her craft through war and plague, tragedy and triumph, love and loss.

I think this is my favourite Tracy Chevalier book. I enjoy her work and her narrators are great but there was something more to the Glass Maker. I’ve been to Venice and Murano and she creates them beautifully and although unsure at first, ended up loving how the story spans and intertwines with history, how life and the world changes but at the same time, it doesn’t! The narrator was fabulous and nailed the accent, just the right amount!

Story
Molly the maid is all alone in the world. A nobody. She’s used to being invisible in her job at the Regency Grand Hotel, plumping pillows and wiping away the grime, dust and secrets of the guests passing through. She’s just a maid—why should anyone take notice? But Molly is thrown into the spotlight when she discovers an infamous guest, Mr Black, very dead in his bed. This isn’t a mess that can be easily cleaned up.

Sadly the narrator killed it for me. I don’t feel she managed to capture the depth of the relationship between Eilis & (…. No spoilers!) the Brooklyn Italian accent was REALLY hard to listen to. The story was fab

Disappointed
Reviewed: 02-11-2023
I’m a huge Ken Follett fan but struggled with Jackdaws… I don’t know if it was just the ‘narrator effect’ (I struggle with books where the narrator doesn’t sit well with me) or if it was also the writing. Just found the thinking of the main character somewhat unbelievable although enjoyed the overarching storyline.

Story
Ann Patchett’s award winning, New York Times best-selling Bel Canto balances themes of love and crisis as disparate characters learn that music is their only common language. As in Pratchett’s other novels, including Truth & Beauty and The Magician’s Assistant, the author’s lyrical prose and lucid imagination make Bel Canto a captivating story of strength and frailty, love and imprisonment, and an inspiring tale of transcendent romance.

I tried three times to listen to this book and failed. Have loved other Kate Morton books which is why I tried so hard… couldn’t cope with an Australian narrator trying to sound British - like nails down a blackboard (no prob listening to an Aussie narrator reading an Aussie based book!!) Have no idea of the story despite starting 3 times. Worst part is I left it too late to return - I think they call that salt in the wound

Story
When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early 40s, the town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty facade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.... Pagford is not what it first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen.
