Story
Hugh van Cuylenburg was a primary school teacher volunteering in northern India when he had a life-changing realisation: despite the underprivileged community the children were from, they were remarkably positive. By contrast, back in Australia Hugh knew that all too many children struggled with depression, social anxieties and mental illness. His own little sister had been ravaged by anorexia nervosa. How was it that young people he knew at home, who had food, shelter, friends and a loving family, struggled with their mental health, while these kids seemed so contented and resilient?

For anyone that isn"t sure whether their normal drinking habits are normal. Its reassuring to hear that you are not alone and that someone has tried and tested the alternative and documented the journey. Clare faced a horrendous hurdle in dealing with breast cancer while on a sober path and still managed to stay on track and kept us up to date on her journey, Told with humanity, humour and honesty, a must read if you are sober curious or inhaling quit lit to keep you on the right track. Story
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing. But it"s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute take a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant Nobel-prize-nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Eddie Jaku always considered himself a German first, a Jew second. He was proud of his country. But all of that changed in November 1938, when he was beaten, arrested and taken to a concentration camp. Over the next seven years, Eddie faced unimaginable horrors every day, first in Buchenwald, then in Auschwitz, then on a Nazi death march. He lost family, friends, his country.

Story
Having entertained the idea for years, and even offered a few questionable opportunities, I have decided to tell these stories just as I have always done, in my own voice. The joy that I have felt from chronicling these tales is not unlike listening back to a song that I’ve recorded and can’t wait to share with the world, or reading a primitive journal entry from a stained notebook, or even hearing my voice bounce between the Kiss posters on my wall as a child.

This is the whole story, right from the beginning: the sun-bleached streets, the grimy bars on the Sunset Strip, knowing Daisy’s moment was coming. Relive the euphoria of success and experience the terror that nothing will ever be as good again. Take the uppers so you can keep on believing, take the downers so you can sleep, eventually. Wonder who you are without the drugs or the music or the fans or the family that prop you up. Make decisions that will forever feel tough. Find beauty where you least expect it.

A great story of survival
Reviewed: 25-01-2021
It took a little time to get into the book and the author does sometimes go off the beaten track with details that aren"t really relevant but the storyline and characters were intriguing.
I bought it purely as I was wanting to listen to one book on a long car journey and this would not have been my normal choice. I I would have overlooked it if I had thought it a vampire story. But this is so much more than a vampire story, its about survival and friendships. By the end I was excited to read the 2nd and the final in the trilogy. Scott brick was the perfect narrator.
