About this listen

A riveting story of heroism, heartache, and the power of love to heal all wounds by New York Times bestselling author Charles Martin.

Murphy Shepherd is a man with many secrets. He lives alone on an island, tending the grounds of a church with no parishioners, and he’s dedicated his life to rescuing those in peril. But as he mourns the loss of his mentor and friend, Murph himself may be more lost than he realizes.

When he pulls a beautiful woman named Summer out of Florida’s Intracoastal Waterway, Murph’s mission to lay his mentor to rest at the end of the world takes a dangerous turn. Drawn to Summer, and desperate to find her missing daughter, Murph is pulled deeper and deeper into the dark and dangerous world of modern-day slavery.

With help from some unexpected new friends, including a faithful Labrador he plucks from the ocean and an ex-convict named Clay, Murph must race against the clock to locate the girl before he is consumed by the secrets of his past—and the ghosts who tried to bury them.

With Charles Martin’s trademark lyricism and poignant prose, The Water Keeper is at once a tender love story and a heartrending search for freedom.

“Charles Martin fans rejoice, because he’s done it again . . . a multilayered story woven together with grace and redemption, and packed tight with tension and achingly real characters.” —Lauren Denton, USA TODAY bestselling author of The Hideaway

Another 5 star from Martin

I’ve listened to most of Charles Martins audiobooks, each one different and finding myself not being able to leave the story alone for long! Martin definitely has a natural writing gift! Keep writing Charles, refreshing to listen to clean books full of today’s issues, this book even mentions where I live the on Indian River, Merritt island!

A great read

I absolutely loved this book! Kept me on the edge of my seat and that's during a 12 hour car trip.

Action and romance

Action and romance surround serious topic. I liked how the story developed and secrets were revealed. Some of the circumstances are a bit unbelievable. But the quick action and suspense worked through it.

Worth it

It took me a little bit to get into this book, but then it was difficult to set down. Difficult topic, beautifully written.

Over the top

The plot of this book is a bit over the top. It stretches the bounds of credulity like a rubber band. It is like a James Bond movie. No matter what happens, the character comes back for more. You can’t put it down despite the fact that it is ridiculously impossible.
Having said that, I will read the sequel.

So glad there's a sequel coming!

This is a wonderful, inspiring book! I thoroughly enjoyed the interwoven stories of the hero and the novelist. I'm looking so forward to the next book. Finally a hero who truly is a good guy.

Enjoyable

Narrator did a great job, never felt like I was being "read to". Enjoyable storyline.

Unusual and mesmerizing

Even though the reader was probably too young for Murphy’s age, he’s a wonderful reader who sucked me right into the story, which I thought was quite original. I’ll be looking for more books by Martin and/or Riggs.

seemed to pack too much in

Charles Martin is one of my favorite authors but this book seemed to be trying too hard. It just seemed too much was packed into one book.

Also the character of Summer seemed to have feelings and reactions incongruous to her situation of a missing daughter.
