About this listen
June Hur, critically acclaimed author of The Silence of Bones and The Forest of Stolen Girls, returns with The Red Palace - a third evocative, atmospheric historical mystery perfect for fans of Courtney Summers and Kerri Maniscalco.
To enter the palace means to walk a path stained in blood....
Joseon (Korea), 1758. There are few options available to illegitimate daughters in the capital city, but through hard work and study, 18-year-old Hyeon has earned a position as a palace nurse. All she wants is to keep her head down, do a good job, and perhaps finally win her estranged father's approval.
But Hyeon is suddenly thrust into the dark and dangerous world of court politics when someone murders four women in a single night, and the prime suspect is Hyeon's closest friend and mentor. Determined to prove her beloved teacher's innocence, Hyeon launches her own secret investigation.
In her hunt for the truth, she encounters Eojin, a young police inspector also searching for the killer. When evidence begins to point to the Crown Prince himself as the murderer, Hyeon and Eojin must work together to search the darkest corners of the palace to uncover the deadly secrets behind the bloodshed.

Sergey and Marina Dyachenko mix dramatic scenes with romance, action and wit, in a style both direct and lyrical. Written with a sure artistic hand, The Scar is the story of a man driven by his own feverish demons to find redemption and the woman who just might save him. Egert is a brash, confident member of the elite guards and an egotistical philanderer. But after he kills an innocent student in a duel, a mysterious man known as “The Wanderer” challenges Egert and slashes his face with his sword, leaving Egert with a scar that comes to symbolize his cowardice.

Story
Magic, adventure, mystery, and romance combine in this epic debut in which a young princess must reclaim her dead mother’s throne, learn to be a ruler - and defeat the Red Queen, a powerful and malevolent sorceress determined to destroy her. On her 19th birthday, Princess Kelsea Raleigh Glynn, raised in exile, sets out on a perilous journey back to the castle of her birth to ascend her rightful throne. Plain and serious, a girl who loves books and learning, Kelsea bears little resemblance to her mother, the vain and frivolous Queen Elyssa.

Written by a lady of the court at the height of Heian culture, this book enthrals with its lively gossip, witty observations and subtle impressions. Lady Shōnagon was an erstwhile rival of Lady Murasaki, whose novel, The Tale of Genji, fictionalized the elite world Lady Shōnagon so eloquently relates.

Excellent narration to a fascinating historical fiction story
I’ve not read much historical fiction based in Asian/Pacific countries. This was so interesting! I learned so much about the history of this nation and culture which is so different than mine - all while being entertained by a murder mystery and romance subplot. Wonderful characters and a great story.

Loved this book! The descriptions and story is in general great, I love the romance and the type of not super slow slow burn. The main character is fun to listen to and I enjoyed her thoughts and feelings.
I recommend this book if you love K-dramas and want to have a book that is like that between shows. I look forward to reading more from this author!

Such an Awesome Listen!!
My college age daughters and myself, we absolutely enjoyed this book! The story was captivating and the narration was so good! The narrator, Michelle H. Lee, was so good! I cannot say enough about her performance. I am very interested in listening to other works of hers and from the author, June Hur. Such great and descriptive writing. We are not Korean but we truly enjoy the Korean culture, our friends, K-Drama, and my daughters really like K-Pop. Because we have immersed ourselves in the Korean culture, we were able to follow the story extremely well. Great from beginning to end!

I had a few of the author’s videos come up on my Instagram feed and was intrigued. The book was a great read. The story was engaging and the characters felt full and real. I think I’ll be checking out June Hur’s other books now.
