About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
THE MOST TERRIFYING NOVEL EVER WRITTEN.
THE SCARIEST MOVIE EVER MADE.
Father Damien Karras: 'Where is Regan?'
Regan MacNeil: 'In here. With us.'
The terror begins unobtrusively. Noises in the attic. In the child's room, an odd smell, the displacement of furniture, an icy chill. At first, easy explanations are offered. Then frightening changes begin to appear in eleven-year-old Regan. Medical tests fail to shed any light on her symptoms, but it is as if a different personality has invaded her body.
Father Damien Karras, a Jesuit priest, is called in. Is it possible that a demonic presence has possessed the child? Exorcism seems to be the only answer...
First published in 1971, The Exorcist became a literary phenomenon and inspired one of the most shocking films ever made. This audio edition, polished, expanded and narrated by the author, includes new dialogue, a new character and a chilling new extended scene, provides an unforgettable listening experience that has lost none of its power to shock and continues to thrill and terrify new listeners.
A tremendous novel...fast, powerful and completely gripping - Sunday Express
Immensely satisfying... holds its audience in a vice-like grip - LA Times

Suburbia. Shady, tree-lined streets; well-tended lawns; and cozy homes. A nice, quiet place to grow up. Unless you are teenage Meg or her crippled sister, Susan. On a dead-end street, in the dark, damp basement of the Chandler house, Meg and Susan are left captive to the savage whims and rages of a distant aunt who is rapidly descending into madness. It is a madness that infects all three of her sons and finally the entire neighborhood. Only one troubled boy stands hesitantly between Meg and Susan and their cruel, torturous deaths.

Story
On December 26, 1973, The Exorcist was released. Within days it had become legend. Moviegoers braved hours-long lines in winter weather to see it. Some audience members famously fainted or vomited. Half a century later, the movie that both inspired and transcends the modern horror genre has lost none of its power to terrify and unsettle. The Exorcist Legacy reveals the complete story of this cultural phenomenon, from the real-life exorcism in 1949 Maryland that inspired William Peter Blatty's bestselling novel on which the movie is based, to its many sequels, prequels, TV series, and homages.

Story
Kidnappers grabbed Jenna in broad daylight, right in front of her children and their horrified classmates. Her family was issued an insane ransom demand: $25 million in cash and jewels, payable by the end of the school day, otherwise they’ll never see her again. As Jenna’s mother scrambles to gather the money, detectives Mo Butler and George Ortega follow the trail of the kidnappers, which will lead them through a sordid landscape of jealous lovers, broken dreamers, and twisted schemers. But every second counts, and there’s one thing Jenna Wade doesn’t have: very much time.

Story
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Story
My fiancé brought me tea and scrambled eggs in bed that morning, and we snuggled together, talking about buying our rings, and about our perfect wedding next year. Then we headed into town. He held my hand and gazed at the ring I liked best, a smile spreading slowly over his face. Then a glass of bubbly to celebrate. I felt flushed, excited and ready for the rest of my life with the man I loved. We race to get on the train home. It screams to a halt and I run towards its open doors. Made it. I think he’s right behind me — but when I turn around, he’s gone.

Story
Tess Strebel can’t recognize her own face. She can’t recognize her home. Her bedroom is unfamiliar. And she can’t remember the handsome stranger lying next to her in bed. A stranger who claims he’s her husband. Tess reads a letter in her own handwriting, composed during a rare lucid day, explaining her life as it now exists: she was in a terrible car accident one year ago. Every morning, she wakes up unable to remember most of the last decade. Including her own wedding.

Excellent reading
I’m often not a fan of writers reading their own work for an audiobook. Very few seem to be adequate performers. In this case, I can’t imagine anyone doing better than William Peter Blatty, who gives an emotionally engaging performance with well delineated characters. He does particularly well with Kinderman and with the demon, but really everything here is great.

An excellent reading of a horror classic.
An excellent reading of a horror classic by the author himself. I don’t know if William Peter Blatty has ever considered a career as an actor but the way in which he gives each of the characters their own individual voices as he is reading suggests that perhaps he should. Lovers of the film should note that there is a lot more to the story in this novel than there is to the story in the film on the screen, but then, as far as I understand it, this edition has more added to it than the original novel. The detailed descriptions of black masses make for interesting, educational reading. I am a Christian, and this may seem odd listening material for a person of the faith, and to end this short review without giving too much away I did not find the ending to be a downer but actually found it to be quite spiritually uplifting.

Raw, chilling yet oddly moving and heartbreakingly human - a work of art
I have read this in print form years ago, and loved it. This book is so much more than the possession storyline- that is almost incidental to the torture the adult characters subject themselves to. Though the movie is good, the frailty, shortcomings and fears are brought to life by the elegant writing that hints at the very divinity the characters are so desperate to find.
Not normally a fan of authors reading their own books, I found the narration was a revelation. William Peter Blatty has a cadence, gentle tone and understated emotion that contrasts deliciously with the guttural tones of the demon.
Reagan bears the brunt of the demons fury, yet those surrounding her are already dead lost in their own private hell.
Ultimately it speaks all of us who have ever feared letting our loved ones down.... who realised their career choices were detrimental to our families... who are terrified of messing our kids up... who have been unable to embrace faith or have lost it. It paints a portrait of a society on the brink of being at the mercy of pharmaceutical solutions.
My favourite purchase on Audible ever.
