About this listen
Mormonism Unvailed, authored by Eber D. Howe and published in 1834, presents one of the first published critiques and investigations into the origins and credibility of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS Church or Mormon Church) and its founder, Joseph Smith. The book elucidates the skepticism and criticism of early Mormonism, disputing its authenticity and alleging fraudulent and deceptive practices within its early formation. Howe uses various affidavits, letters, and testimonies as substantive materials to confront and challenge the emerging faith, providing what he perceived as a startling insight into the veiled aspects of Mormonism.
A significant portion of Mormonism Unvailed hinges upon the testimonies and statements collected from individuals acquainted with Joseph Smith and his family, particularly those residing in Palmyra, New York, and its vicinity. The affidavits, which include assertions from notable figures like Isaac Hale, Smith’s father-in-law, and several of the Smith family's neighbors, predominantly depict Joseph Smith as a man involved in money-digging activities and articulate a general mistrust toward the Smith family. Moreover, the book lays out a substantial argument implying that the Book of Mormon was a fabricated text, not a divinely inspired scripture as purported by Smith and his followers.
Moreover, Howe gives attention to the Spalding theory, which postulates that the Book of Mormon was derived from an unpublished manuscript written by Solomon Spalding, a former clergyman. This theory posits that Sidney Rigdon, an early Mormon leader, had access to Spalding’s writings and conspired with Joseph Smith to develop and present the Book of Mormon as a new scripture. Mormonism Unvailed seeks to shed light on these controversial aspects and present an argument that fundamentally disputes the divine revelations and claims of the burgeoning Mormon faith, offering listeners a deeply critical perspective that stimulates skepticism towards the new religious movement.

Once a person really admits their helpless, sinful condition and accepts Christ as their Savior, can that person ever lose their relationship with Christ? The difference between Ironside's treatment of the subject is that after making his case for the Eternal Security of the Believer, he deals carefully with verses in the Bible which would seem to teach otherwise.

Who is Satan? Is he real? How did he become the devil? What is he doing now, and how does he work? What is his ultimate end? This fascinating book describes what God reveals about the archenemy of God and of all believers. Using the Bible, Arthur W. Pink lays out, in an engaging and approachable way, who Satan is, and the “gospel” he uses in his many attempts to confuse and confound the ongoing work of our Lord. This short book is especially relevant to our day, as what Pink saw in “the bud” is now in full bloom and producing much evil fruit.

And just as the Apostle John didn't draw any attention to himself, so also J. C. Ryle clearly and wonderfully directs his words and our thoughts toward the inspired words of scripture. If we truly love God, we will love his word; and the more we study his word, the more we will love God.

Story
Old Paths is a collection of 19 of J. C. Ryle's most effective tracts on the leading truths of Christianity, which are, as he says, "necessary to salvation." In including in such a series Inspiration, Election, and Perseverance, he allows that good Christians have disagreed and will still disagree about them, but he inserts them nevertheless on account of the immense importance of the first and the extraordinary neglect into which the last two have fallen. Ryle's racy style, plainspokenness, and good taste are sure to secure your affection and hold your attention.

Story
What is meant by the "Great Tribulation?" Will the church endure the tribulation? Is the rapture a tenable belief? H.A. Ironside contrasts the judgment of God with salvation to determine the basis for the events of the future. He introduces biblical prophecy, connects to historical events, and offers an exhaustive biblical survey of the Great Tribulation. Most importantly, Ironside explains that the Great Tribulation differs from God's wrath or fury. Ultimately God’s judgment and wrath - and the events of the tribulation - are overcome by salvation and love.

There are some men in the pages of history, whose greatness no person of common sense thinks of disputing. They tower above the herd of mankind, like the Pyramids, the Parthenon, and the Colosseum, among buildings. Such men were Luther and Augustine, Gustavus Adolphus and George Washington, Columbus and Sir Isaac Newton. He who questions greatness must be content to be thought very ignorant, very prejudiced, or very eccentric. Public opinion has come to a conclusion about them - they were great men.

Story
The City of God is one of the most important works of Christian history and philosophy ever written. The writings of St. Augustine are as intriguing to the casual reader as it is to Christian researchers. St. Augustine's work provides insight into Western thought and the development of Western civilizations. The City of God provides the reader with an artful contrast between earthy cities and those in heaven as a representation of the eternal struggle between good and evil. The City of God was originally penned in the early 5th century as a response to the prevalent belief that Christianity was to blame for the fall of Rome. St. Augustine is known as one of the most influential Fathers of the Catholic Church. Born November 13, 354, Augustine would eventually be recognized as a Saint by the Catholic Church, the Eastern Christian Church, and the Anglican Communion.

Did Jesus of Nazareth really intend to start a brand-new religion called Christianity? Or did he come to fulfill that which all of the Hebrew prophets had foretold since the fall of man, something the holy scriptures mysteriously call the restitution of all things? Veteran journalist and author Joseph Farah seeks to shed light on what few sermons today teach about, few authors expound upon, and few Bible studies explore: the coming kingdom of God.

Story
The 10 enlightening (and often humorous) lectures of Medieval Myths and Mysteries will show you how far from the “dark” times of legend these centuries were. Uncover the facts about the Knights Templar. Reveal the truth behind the tales of legendary creatures like the Questing Beast and the unicorn. Trace the events of the Black Death and the ways it altered the world in its wake, and much more. With Professor Armstrong, you will dig deep into the ways that later generations reshaped the narrative of the medieval years and perpetuated the myths.

Story
For 30 years, Lynn Wilder, once a tenured faculty member at Brigham Young University, and her family lived in, loved, and promoted the Mormon Church. Then, their son Micah, serving his Mormon mission in Florida, had a revelation: God knew him personally. God loved him. And the Mormon Church did not offer the true gospel. As Lynn tells her story of abandoning the deception of Mormonism to receive God's grace, she gives a rare look into Mormon culture, what it means to grow up Mormon, and why the contrasts between Mormonism and Christianity make all the difference in the world.

According to Joseph Smith, in September of 1823, an angel appeared to him and directed him to a hill near his home. Buried there, Smith found a box containing a stack of thin metal sheets, gold in color and covered with what appeared to be ancient engravings. Exactly four years later, the angel instructed Smith to translate the plates into English. When the text was published, a new religion was born.

Story
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was founded by Joseph Smith in 1830 in the so-called "burned-over district" of upstate New York, which was producing seers and prophets daily. Most of the new creeds flamed out; Smith's would endure, becoming the most significant homegrown religion in American history. In American Zion Benjamin E. Park presents a fresh, sweeping account of the Latter-day Saints.

Story
Brigham Young was a rough-hewn craftsman from New York whose impoverished and obscure life was electrified by the Mormon faith. He trudged around the United States and England to gain converts for Mormonism, spoke in spiritual tongues, married more than 50 women, and eventually transformed a barren desert into his vision of the Kingdom of God. While previous accounts of his life have been distorted by hagiography or polemical exposé, John Turner provides a fully realized portrait of a colossal figure in American religion, politics, and westward expansion.

Joseph F. Smith was born in 1838 to Hyrum Smith and Mary Fielding Smith. Six years later both his father and his uncle, Joseph Smith Jr., the founding prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, were murdered in Carthage, Illinois. The trauma of that event remained with Joseph F. for the rest of his life, affecting his personal behavior and public tenure in the highest tiers of the LDS Church, including the post of president from 1901 until his death in 1918.

Story
Defying both civil authorities and the Mormon establishment in Salt Lake City, the renegade leaders of these Taliban-like theocracies are zealots who answer only to God; some 40,000 people still practice polygamy in these communities. At the core of Krakauer’s book are brothers Ron and Dan Lafferty, who insist they received a commandment from God to kill a blameless woman and her baby girl. Beginning with a meticulously researched account of this appalling double murder, Krakauer constructs a bone-chilling narrative of messianic delusion, polygamy, savage violence, and unyielding faith.

Fantastic book. I can’t believe it’s not prioritized more in the ex-Mormon world. E.D. Howe deconstructs Mormonism more incisively than modern critics. Great content!
