About this listen

In recent years, Christians everywhere are rediscovering the Jewish roots of their faith. Every year at Easter time, many believers now celebrate Passover meals (known as Seders) seeking to understand exactly what happened at Jesus' final Passover, the night before he was crucified. Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist shines fresh light on the Last Supper by looking at it through Jewish eyes. Using his in-depth knowledge of the Bible and ancient Judaism, Dr. Brant Pitre answers questions such as:

  • What were the Jewish hopes for the Messiah?
  • What was Jesus' purpose in instituting the Eucharist during the feast of Passover?
  • And, most important of all, what did Jesus mean when he said, "This is my body...This is my blood"?

To answer these questions, Pitre explores ancient Jewish beliefs about the Passover of the Messiah, the miraculous manna from heaven, and the mysterious Bread of the Presence. As he shows, these three keys - the Passover, the manna, and the Bread of the Presence - have the power to unlock the original meaning of the Eucharistic words of Jesus. Along the way, Pitre also explains how Jesus united the Last Supper to his death on Good Friday and his Resurrection on Easter Sunday.

Inspiring and informative, Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist is a groundbreaking work that is sure to illuminate one of the greatest mysteries of the Christian faith: the mystery of Jesus' presence in "the breaking of the bread".

Christ, revealed in Word and Sacrament

Would you listen to Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist again? Why?

I will definitely listen to this book again because the truth about Christ found in these pages holds eternal reward for those who will receive the blessings that come through the Universal Church (which Jesus founded). In Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist, the veil of ignorance of scripture is torn as students learn about Christ's the Logos, and His Apostolic/sacramental outpouring on earth.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Learning from Dr. Pitre is truly an encounter with Christ.

Marvelous!!!!

This is a tremendously profound and scholarly book. I would have to say it is the best book I've ever read on the Holy Eucharist and its Jewish roots.

Illuminating

Incredibly powerful. It’s eye opening and seemingly new. Yet it’s all a reiteration of what we’ve always been taught. I can’t help but rejoice in the gift of our Our Lord in the Eucharist and can’t wait to get back to Mass to receive Him. So very thankful for this book.

So many questions answered!

I have always had a fascination with Jewish roots because Jesus was Jewish. I suspected a deeper understanding of Judiaism would unlock somewhat hidden messages in what Jesus did and said while on Earth. The author is respectful of the reader and the subject matter in providing abundant evidence of the connections he describes and explains. We aren’t expected simply to take his word for his assertions. Outstanding and so worth the time spent listening. I will revisit soon as my Lenten study. I cannot recommend this book any more highly… deserves ALL the stars!!!

Interesting and informative

This was written from a Roman Catholic perspective, so some Protestants may disagree with a few things. Although I didn’t hear a lot of new information, I heard things from a different perspective. Any Christian wanting to know the relationship between the Jewish sacrifice and the Eucharist would find this interesting.
