About this listen

It isn't easy making a living as a lady's companion when one possesses a sharp tongue and an original mind. That's why Emma Greyson has gone through three such positions in six months. Her current post at a tiresome country house party has her bored to tears - until an extraordinary encounter with the legendary Edison Stokes leads to a secret position as his assistant.

Stokes is on a peculiar mission, searching for an anonymous thief who has stolen an ancient book of arcane potions. He suspects his quarry is among the party's guests - and that the villain is looking for an intuitive woman on whom to test a certain elixir. A woman just like Emma...For Emma, the new post brings unexpected passion and chilling danger. But when murder strikes, she realizes the awful truth. Unless she and Edison devise a scheme to outwit a merciless killer, she could forever lose the man of her dreams - and even her very life....

Good for an Abridged edition

The narrator does a wonderful job with the story, but a lot is cut out.

This is an abridged but first in the Vanza series.

Abridged version but paid $4.95 so I got what I paid for. If you want the full version look for the full copy.

Perhaps a little too abridged

I bought this book specifically because I had a mundane task to do that would take 3 hours. The reader did an excellent job with characters and accents, the book was a nice light read, and filled the required time-slot.

But, this book was almost too short. I couldn't help but feel the romance would have been sweeter, and the characters a little more sympathetic had this not been chopped down so much. The romance was there, it certainly wasn't a unique or grand romance (just the usual types of plot devices that one sees in many romances), but I didn't expect much more than this. I think I might rather have spent my book credit on something with a little more substance. But if you are looking for a fast and light listen, then this is your book.

(A warning -- main characters in this book are followers of the the ancient order of Vanza, so if you are a stickler for "keeping it real", you might find this little add on of supernatural-kung-fu-meets-mysticism all a little goofy.)

Good listen

I like the unabridged books best so I would have prefered to hear the longer version of this book. The reader was very good and it was a great way to pass 3 hours. I love Amanda Quick so if you like her books you will like this one.

love it!

Many years ago I listened to this novel while I was painting in the heat. Loved it so much, I started it again upon its completion! Just as good today. Fast paced, hokey, interresting, fun!

Love love love love it!

I absolutely love this story. It’s one I read twice before I started listening to this abridged version. I’ve now listen to it at least a half dozen times. The story is wonderful. It’s funny, romantic, intriguing, and thoroughly engaging. Edison and Emma are two fantastic characters who are extremely well suited. The narrator Ms. McTeer is the best at her craft. She has an amazing talent for voices I never have any trouble distinguishing between the characters who are speaking, and she seems to have an endless supply of voices! She brings the story alive; when I listen to it it’s almost as if I’m watching a live performance. Every time I listen to this story I LOL. I only wish she’d narrated more than just one other Amanda Quick novel. I highly recommend this book!!!
