About this listen

The basis for the film starring Academy Award nominee Will Smith, I Am Legend is a classic of horror and suspense.

In I Am Legend, a terrible plague has decimated the world, and those who were unfortunate enough to survive are transformed into bloodthirsty creatures of the night. Robert Neville is the last living man on earth. Every other man, woman, and child has become a vampire, and they are all hungry for Neville’s blood. By day, he is the hunter, stalking the sleeping undead through the abandoned ruins of civilization. By night, he barricades himself in his home and prays for the dawn. How long can one man survive in a world of vampires?

Richard Matheson’s chilling tale is a white-knuckle ride into a world of darkness and terror.

what a narrator can do!

this book is a great example of how great narration can heighten the listeners experience.

This reader was incredibly chilled by both the story line and the narration.

Don't let the movie stop you-this is really nothing much like it. Try it out you will not be sorry!

3 Stars...

This is the rare moment that the movie is way better than the book. About an hour or so into the book I was hoping the vampires would win - the main character is really that annoying..

haunting

This auidioversion of I am Legend is well read and very enjoyable. The haunting loneliness is well conveyed. If you have just seen the movie I recommend the book, it's so much better.

Not what I expected

This is the first audiobook I had ever purchased for my IPOD. I started listening yesterday morning and finished it this afternoon (a day and a half). It was not what I expected. I had seen the Will Smith movie version of course and was expecting some type of variation on that. This version was much more morose and dark. That being said, I couldnt put it down and on more then one occasion, I caught myself, shoulders tensed, mouth open, eyes straining, fully caught up in what the narrator was saying and what I was seeing in my minds eye. I enjoyed the experience. The only criticism I have is that the narraots voice was irritating at times. Just a personal preference. I recommend this audiobook.

A full circle story

I think this would have been a story overlooked by me except I got it free and had nothing to lose.

To be the only person alive for 3 years...Neville went between sanity and madness.
I did find myself lost at times between current and flashback. Maybe Neville did as well. I’m not sure if I was intended to find humor in Cortman’s nightly visits, but I did. I pictured Cortman and Neville being the kind of men who would compete over the best kept lawns in their former lives. Then for 3 years Cortman stands on the lawn and yells for Neville to come out. I found myself wondering what Cortman or the other vampires would have done to Neville if they would have caught him.

Did I like the narrator or not? I can’t decide. At points he read so slowly that I increased the speed of the playback. Then I found myself having a hard time following along, so I’d switch back. Early on I found the speed of his reading cumbersome. When Neville’s watch stopped, and he had to race the vampires back to his house the narrator read faster. After that I found that I appreciated the slower cadence and found it increasing the suspense of the story.

This was a binge read for me.

Good story.....

Would have been a great movie if they stuck to the original storyline. Hollywood could have modernized this story and stuck to the original plot. Most people watch the movie then read the book. This is nothing like the movie, just a heads up.

Narrator Makes it Brilliant!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, the narrator is perhaps the best I have ever listened too.

Which scene was your favorite?

When Robert Neville was in the process of discovering what caused the plague.

Fascinating!

I’ve seen several of the movie versions but never read the book itself. I have to say, the book is far better (as usual), and ever so more interesting than what I’ve seen. The writing does, at times, reveal the books true age but it definitely didn’t feel like I was reading some old time fifties horror novel. All in all, a great read and I can see why so many wanted to make their own movie from it....
