About this listen

A defense attorney is prepared to play. But is she a pawn in a master’s deadly match? A twisting novel of suspense by New York Times bestselling author Robert Dugoni.

Keera Duggan was building a solid reputation as a Seattle prosecutor, until her romantic relationship with a senior colleague ended badly. For the competitive former chess prodigy, returning to her family’s failing criminal defense law firm to work for her father is the best shot she has. With the right moves, she hopes to restore the family’s reputation, her relationship with her father, and her career.

Keera’s chance to play in the big leagues comes when she’s retained by Vince LaRussa, an investment adviser accused of murdering his wealthy wife. There’s little hard evidence against him, but considering the couple’s impending and potentially nasty divorce, LaRussa faces life in prison. The prosecutor is equally challenging: Miller Ambrose, Keera’s former lover, who’s eager to destroy her in court on her first homicide defense.

As Keera and her team follow the evidence, they uncover a complicated and deadly game that’s more than Keera bargained for. When shocking information turns the case upside down, Keera must decide between her duty to her client, her family’s legacy, and her own future.

Critic reviews

“Fast-paced legal-intrigue gold that could be improved only by kicking off a new series.”Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Twist-filled.…John Grisham fans will be pleased.”Publishers Weekly

“One of the best puzzle books ever! I raced through the pages, which are packed full of compelling characters and taut gamesmanship, desperate to learn the answer to this extraordinary thriller, which is both whodunit and how-dunit. I would follow Robert Dugoni anywhere.”—Lisa Gardner, #1 New York Times bestselling author

Breathy bedroom-type voice not suitable

Not Dugoni’s best but ok story dumbed down by the narration. I don’t know when the low breathy narration thing began but it seems everywhere and I would like it to stop. This delivery may work for romance or the oh Lordy poor me novels but this is a particularly bad choice for a story with a lot of legal/courtroom segments and when the main character is an intelligent lawyer. The bedroom voice undermines the story and all the women in it. Please stop.

Suspenseful enjoyed the

The connection of the game of chess to the game of defense in a court of law was interesting. The inclusion of the family dynamics was good. The comparison of a prosecutor becoming a defense attorney was interesting.

Hope it’s a new series!!

I like to read the reviews at the end so I can see if I’m in agreement with the majority. I think I am. The narration didn’t distract me at all and I like the whole story - chess included. I am always amazed at how different the reviews are. I’ve been on both sides of the fence. I loved this novel and it might be my favorite by this author. I highly recommend it.

Dugoni Does it Again

Aside from the Crosswhite series, Dugoni is an excellent standalone storyteller. Maybe this will be a series, but this one is topnotch courtroom drama.

Wow What a Ride!

This was the first novel I’ve listened to by Robert Dugoni other than the Tracy Crosswhite series and I enjoyed it just as much! While I certainly hope he does not stop the Tracy series, I surely hope this is the start of a new series for him as well! So intriguing with twist and turns. Who really did kill Ann in her wheelchair? And who is sending all these mysterious emails to Keira? Can she handle her first murder trial and how much help or hindrance will her famed alcoholic lawyer father be? While I did not understand the frequent references to the game of chess, it did not deter me at all from the storyline playing out. Highly highly recommend! Excellent narration as well!
