Ivan Doig
About this listen
National Book Award finalist Ivan Doig had only a vague memory of his mother until he discovered a cache of her letters. They revealed a passionate, can-do woman who loved the lilting rhythm of words. A moving prequel to his acclaimed memoir This House of Sky, Doig’s Heart Earth highlights his childhood before his mother’s death and eloquently captures the texture of the American West, the fortunes of a family, and one woman’s indomitable spirit.

But Annie wanted to see the Pacific Ocean before she died. She ignored her doctor’s advice to move into the county charity home. Part epic of Texas, part classic coming-of-age story, part unflinching examination of the bloody price of power, The Son is a gripping and utterly transporting novel that maps the legacy of violence in the American west with rare emotional acuity, even as it presents an intimate portrait of one family across two centuries. Eli McCullough is just twelve-years-old when a marauding band of Comanche storm his Texas homestead and brutally murder his mother and sister, taking him as a captive.

Their journey is touched by serendipity and the kindness of strangers, and they cover territory even more extraordinary than the Badlands, where they search for Davy from their Airstream trailer.

Story
Suffused with the history and landscapes of the American West—its otherworldly flora and fauna, its rugged loggers and bridge builders—this extraordinary novella poignantly captures the disappearance of a distinctly American way of life. It tells the story of Robert Grainer, a day laborer in the American West at the start of the twentieth century—an ordinary man in extraordinary times. Buffeted by the loss of his family, Grainer struggles to make sense of this strange new world.

Story
Prodigal Summer weaves together three stories of human love within a larger tapestry of lives in southern Appalachia. At the heart of these intertwined narratives is a den of coyotes that have recently migrated into the region. Deanna Wolfe, a reclusive wildlife biologist, watches them from an isolated mountain cabin where she is caught off-guard by Eddie Bondo, a young hunter who comes to invade her most private spaces and her solitary life.

Story
Claude Wheeler resembles the youngest son of an American fairy tale. His fortune is ready-made for him, but he refuses to settle for it. Alienated from his crass father and pious mother, all but rejected by a wife who reserves her ardor for missionary work, and dissatisfied with farming, Claude is an idealist without an ideal to cling to. It is only when his country enters the First World War that Claude finds what he has been searching for all his life.

Story
In this romantic and raw adventure set in the untamed wilderness of Wyoming of 1886, an anonymous college graduate ventures out west where he encounters gun fights, lynching, cattle rustlers, high-stake poker games, Indian attacks, and a brave, honest and imposing cowboy known simply as the Virginian. Presented as the archetypal, ideal hero of the "western" genre (which was novelized for the very first time in this same book), the Virginian, a foreman at Shiloh Ranch, carries a strong sense of justice.

Sweet, sad, funny, poetic memoir of Doig's family
If you could sum up Heart Earth in three words, what would they be?
lyrical, insightful memoir
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I laughed out loud a few times, but was mostly in awe of Doig's ability to help me experience what he and his parents experienced during his childhood.
Any additional comments?
I love the way Doig concisely evokes a whole world of feeling; he sees such humor, poetry, and intensity in each moment and place. Somehow he notices everything.. A sweet, sad, funny memoir of his childhood and his mother.

Great Doig
Stechschulte sounds so much like I imagine Doig must have. Loved learning about his family, especially his mother. This is the only Doig book I had not read, and I am so glad it was the last. A fitting tribute.

Like a warm blanket on a chilly night.
I love Ivan Doig. Making my way through every one of them, some twice. Decided to try the audible.com version. Tom Stechschulte was made for Doig books, or lullabies or road maps. That deep voice and his changes of character are so good. I’ll be going back to my favorite Doig books to hear Tom read them. My only criticism is the book was too short.

How can words make you feel so much?
Letters to words to sentences to paragraphs to one of the best books I’ve read. I just am stumped on how much I felt while reading this book. Just words, but not really. And you got the privilege to know the Doigs.
