Story
The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Detective Sergeant Chris Waters got the call at 05.29 that July morning. This is it, said DCI Reeve, you'll be first there, it's all yours, you're the crime scene manager. Suddenly, after months of waiting and wondering, Waters finds himself in at the deep end, and alone at the scene of a puzzling murder. As the investigation proceeds, the detectives at Kings Lake Central find themselves visiting familiar places and talking to some familiar faces, while old enmities reappear in the incident room. Before this is over, Chris Waters will need to make a career-changing decision.

Story
Alison Willetts has survived a stroke, deliberately induced by a skilful manipulation of pressure points on the head and neck. She can see, hear and feel, but she is completely unable to move or communicate. In leaving Alison Willetts alive, the police believe the killer's made his first mistake. Then DI Tom Thorne discovers the horrifying truth: it isn't Alison who is the mistake, it's the three women already dead. Thorne must find a killer whose agenda is disturbingly unique, and Alison, the one person who holds the key to the killer's identity, is unable to say anything....

Story
Amazing what bodily injury could do for a man. A fall from a racehorse had left brilliant jockey Sid Halley dangerously depressed, with a wrecked hand and the need for a new career. And now a bullet wound was helping him find one. He'd been with a detective agency since his racing accident, but it wasn't until some two-bit hoodlum drilled a slug into his side that he was sent out on a case of his own. That was where he met Zanna Martin, a woman who just might make life worth living again.

Another great Peter Diamond mystery
It' a book full of twists and turns that makes for an enjoyable read. The performer has a voice that captures the characters so well that listening to this mystery was more enjoyable than actually reading the story.

Excellent story and narration
My heart. I love Peter Diamond’s character so much. This book in particular was going to need an excellent narrator. Steve Hodson doesn’t disappoint. He has such an incredible range. He brought all of these characters to life and all of the emotion without overdoing it. A very skilled reading of a beautifully written book.

Subpar for a Diamond novel
A lot of unnecessary filler and very over the top narration. Where is Simon Prebble?

Great story - a shocker
This was a wonderful story - even though the loss of Stephanie will be felt very deeply. I couldn’t believe it when I first read that the body Diamond discovers is his wife, but it was the beginning of an excellent, twisty story. I missed Simon Prebble’s voice, and marked it down a little because I didn’t like Hodson’s narration. However, he does a pretty good job after all - great regional accents and distinct voices. I just didn’t like his voice very much.

Always A Fan Of Peter Lovesey
Would you listen to Diamond Dust again? Why?
I move on. So many books, so little time.
If you’ve listened to books by Peter Lovesey before, how does this one compare?
Excellent. They keep my attention and the character is so smart but so exasperating. Our hero has many foibles, but you are rooting for him all along. I think those of us who worked for politically motivated sorts, can commiserate with our hero. I have loved all Mr. Lovesy's books.
Have you listened to any of Steve Hodson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Don't really know. I chose books based on the author and subject matter. I really don't recall bad narrators. They are professionals and do audition.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Never. I have a real life.
Any additional comments?
Looking forward to all of the other Lovesy books in my wish list. The narrator is good, so, Nothing but anticipation here.

Couldn’t stop listening
I’ve so enjoyed the first seven books in this series. Struggle with the frequent change in narrators though. But in spite of it they have all done an excellent job although I struggled with Michael Healy the most but got used to him after 3 books :). This one was so good, kept me guessing. Love the characters but will miss Stephanie. Ready to see where Diamond takes us next.
