About this listen
A poignant masterpiece of wrenching personal expression from the author of On the Road and The Dharma Bums.
In this 1962 novel, Kerouac"s alter ego, Jack Duluoz, overwhelmed by success and excess, gravitates back and forth between wild binges in San Francisco and an isolated cabin on the California coast where he attempts to renew his spirit and clear his head of madness and alcohol. Only nature seems to restore him to a sense of balance. In the words of Allen Ginsberg, Big Sur "reveals consciousness in all its syntactic elaboration, detailing the luminous emptiness of his own paranoiac confusion".

Story
“The first of my father’s illusions was that bears could survive the life lived by human beings, and the second was that human beings could survive a life led in hotels.” So says John Berry, son of a hapless dreamer, brother to a cadre of eccentric siblings, and chronicler of the lives lived, the loves experienced, the deaths met, and the strange times encountered by the family Berry. Hoteliers, pet-bear owners, friends of Freud (the animal trainer and vaudevillian, that is), and playthings of mad fate, they “dream on” in a funny, sad, outrageous, and moving novel.

Story
In 1637, one Dutchman paid as much for a single tulip bulb as the going price of a town house in Amsterdam. Three and a half centuries later, Amsterdam is once again the mecca for people who care passionately about one particular plant—though this time the obsessions revolves around the intoxicating effects of marijuana rather than the visual beauty of the tulip. How could flowers, of all things, become such objects of desire that they can drive men to financial ruin?

Craig Ferguson has defied the odds his entire life. He has failed when he should have succeeded and succeeded when he should have failed. The fact that he is neither dead nor in a locked facility (at the time of printing) is something of a miracle in itself. In Craig’s candid and revealing memoir, listeners will get a look into the mind and recollections of the unique and twisted Scottish American who became a national hero for pioneering the world’s first TV robot skeleton sidekick and reviving two dudes in a horse suit dancing as a form of entertainment.

Not only can we not currently explain the origin of the universe, it is questionable we will ever be able to explain it. The notion that there are universes within particles, or that particles are conscious, is ascientific, as is the hypothesis that our universe is a computer simulation. On the other hand, the idea that the universe itself is conscious is difficult to rule out entirely.

Jack Kerouac tells the story of Jack Duluoz, a French-Canadian boy growing up in Kerouac’s own birthplace, the dingy factory town of Lowell, Massachusetts. There, Doctor Sax, with his flowing cape, slouched hat, and insinuating leer, is chief among the many ghosts and demons that populate Jack’s fantasy world. Deftly mingling memory and dream, Kerouac captures the accents and textures of his boyhood in Lowell in this novel of a cryptic, apocalyptic hipster phantom.

Kerouac examines his own New York life in a collection of colorful essays. Always transfixed by Neal Cassady—here named Cody Pomeray—along with Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs, Kerouac also explores the feelings he had for a man who inspired much of his work. Transcribing taped conversations between members of their group as they took drugs and drank, Visions of Cody reveals an intimate portrait of people caught up in destructive relationships with substances, and one another, capturing the members of the Beat Generation in the years before any label had been affixed to them.

YES! PLEASE MORE
Dear Publishers: this is just amazing! Please keep producing more from Kerouac and keep up with Ethan Hawke, Hawke was born for narrating this- a match in heaven, pure inspiration transcended from Kerouac thru Hawke. I’m sad it’s over (Sur and Dharma Bums). Desolation or On The Road next pleeease.

Inside sounds of a madman
Kerouac got a lot of eye rolls out of me this time. Maybe it’s because his writing style isn’t that unique anymore. Hey it happened to the Beatles. Still amazing and entertaining.. but there will never be a better high than your first one. Furthermore, regardless of the bounty of good and bad Beatles or Van goph or Kerouac imitations, as important as the art itself was the vibe of the era of the art… fart bart simpson swampson Sampson Sampsonite.
The performance though?! Hawk slays.

Tragedy in paradise
Following Kerouac into his drunken tail spin is heart wrenching. You can almost smell the port wine is his ramblings. The narrator has the perfect indignant tone to capture Kerouac"s paranoia. This is just a phenomenal story and very pleasant to listen to, albeit incredibly depressing.

Brilliant writing...
The writing is brilliant, but what is it about? Alcoholism? Madness? Hedonism? The poison of fame? Yes, pretty much... I had to keep reminding myself that his work is the archetype of this narrative style. He has been so imitated that the original almost feels like a pastiche. The narration is great and the language sounds wonderful with Hawke"s narration. Maybe that"s enough.

Dark, lonely, longing
Kerouac forever! Ethan Hawke is perfect, his reading is gravelly and animated. Also his reading of Dharma Bums, which is what I listened to first. I can listen to these recordings the way I play music, repeating and looping from anywhere, getting the stories mixed.

Frantic yet slow motion train wreck
You will be listening to an aging beatnick"s descent into alcoholism, paranoia and despair. Well worth the listen but it"s a long harsh ride you are on, so don"t hold any illusions otherwise. Well worth the post "on the road" listen.
