About this listen

From New York Times best-selling author Jennifer A. Nielsen comes a stunning thriller about a girl who must escape to freedom after the Berlin Wall divides her family between east and west. With the rise of the Berlin Wall, 12-year-old Gerta finds her family divided overnight. She, her mother, and her brother, Fritz, live on the eastern side, controlled by the Soviets. Her father and middle brother, who had gone west in search of work, cannot return home. Gerta knows it is dangerous to watch the wall, to think forbidden thoughts of freedom, yet she can't help herself.

She sees the East German soldiers with their guns trained on their own citizens; she, her family, her neighbors, and her friends are prisoners in their own city. But one day, while on her way to school, Gerta spots her father on a viewing platform on the western side, pantomiming a peculiar dance.

Then, when she receives a mysterious drawing, Gerta puts two and two together and concludes that her father wants Gerta and Fritz to tunnel beneath the wall, out of East Berlin. However, if they are caught, the consequences will be deadly. No one can be trusted. Will Gerta and her family find their way to freedom?

Keeps your interest

I needed a book to listen to for a 6 hour drive today. My students suggested I read this one over the summer. I listened to it today and didn’t want to stop once I arrived home. Very good story to keep your interest!

Educational for kids

Even though this is fictional I would say that it is a great way to teach kids about the Berlin Wall and it’s affects. You get a better understanding of the book because the story is told in such detail that it is almost as if you were there witnessing those events. In all I loved this book and I recommend it to many older kids and adults even.

Great Book for young Readers - Educational Value

#ColdWar, #EastGermany, #YoungReader,#Educational

This was an interesting read. The story of the book takes place in the 60's, right after the wall was buiIt. I myself grew up in West Berlin in the 70's and 80's. I thought the author did a good job, putting a fictional story around true events. Having myself been to East Berlin during a later time of the wall, it was reminding me of how I felt and how some of my family felt during the time of German divide.
My son was reading this book for his 6th Grade and it brought up many questions and interesting conversations. Definitely would recommend this book for young readers, but also good for older ones.

Wow...

The only part that upset me was realizing that the book had ended. I never thought that such a great [audio] book could be made. I loved the story, and the narrator fit the characters very well. I give great thanks to all of the people that worked to producing this, and I will never forget this [audio] book.

A Night Divided Review

I really enjoyed A Night Divide even though it took about 35-40 chapters to get to the climax but it was worth the listening
