The Warsaw Sisters: A Story of Resilience
Reviewed: 12-26-24
The Warsaw Sisters was a pretty good book, though it starts quite slowly, which is common in historical fiction. However, as the story progresses and you become invested in the sisters and their community, the slow start becomes less noticeable.
The book ends on a happy note, but be warned: it deals with some difficult and potentially upsetting themes.
My only criticism is that I listened to the audiobook, and I didn't particularly enjoy the narrator's performance. However, this didn't affect my rating, as I base my reviews on the book itself, not the narration.

The Manipulator. I can manipulate the emotions of anyone who lets me. I will make you hurt, make you cry, make you laugh and sigh. But my words don't affect him. Especially not when I plead for him to leave. He's always there, watching and waiting. And I can never look away. Not when I want him to come closer. The Shadow. I didn't mean to fall in love. But now that I have, I can't stay away. I'm mesmerized by her smile, by her eyes, and the way she moves. I'll keep watching and waiting. Until I can make her mine. And once she is, I'll never let her go.

This gripping gothic tale captivated me with its chilling atmosphere and haunting storyline. While the narrative has a few minor inconsistencies, the overall tragic story of the Woman in Black is truly unforgettable. A must-read for fans of classic ghost stories and gothic fiction!

Story
Serial killer Gary Heidnik's name will live on in infamy, and his home, 3520 North Marshall Street in Philadelphia, is a house tainted with the memory of unbelievable horrors. What police found there was an incredible nightmare made real. Four young women had been held captive - some for four months - half-naked and chained. They had been tortured, starved, and repeatedly raped. But more grotesque discoveries lay in the kitchen: human limbs frozen, a torso burned to cinders, an empty pot suspiciously scorched....

not what I expected
Reviewed: 11-03-24
This book presented a fascinating topic, but unfortunately, the narrator's delivery fell flat. Additionally, the author's use of outdated language, now considered offensive, created a jarring and uncomfortable reading experience. The tone of the writing often felt condescending, as if the author underestimated the reader's intelligence, which ultimately detracted from my enjoyment.

Story
Dave Pelzer was brutally abused as a child by his emotionally unstable, alcoholic mother. She considered him a slave - no longer a boy, but an "it". He was physically and mentally tortured and starved. The outside world knew nothing of the nightmare he experienced behind closed doors, and his father was aware of the abuse but turned to denial and alcohol. The abuse only fueled a determination to survive and become stronger.

Story
The Pharmacist of Auschwitz is the little-known story of Victor Capesius, a Bayer pharmaceutical salesman from Romania, who, at the age of 35, joined the Nazi SS in 1943 and quickly became the chief pharmacist at the largest death camp, Auschwitz. Based in part on previously classified documents, Patricia Posner exposes Capesius's reign of terror at the camp, his escape from justice, and how a handful of courageous survivors and a single brave prosecutor finally brought him to trial for murder 20 years after the end of the war.
