A book to crack our shells
Reviewed: 07-10-24
I listened to this book twice so far and bought the book so I can"mark it up" as the author said. I am an elder, yet I feel that this read has taken me back to a younger self that has so many open wounds. But by caring for and looking at the wounds, only then could they heal. May it do the same for you.

The voice of the narrator comes across like she's talking to a classroom of first graders. This content should be narrated by a more therapeutic professional voice. Unfortunately, I struggled to pay attention to content due to the sound of the voice.

Story
The lifeblood of any free society is persuasion: changing other people’s minds in order to change things. But America is suffering a crisis of faith in persuasion that is putting its democracy and the planet itself at risk. Anand Giridharadas takes us inside these movements and battles, seeking out the dissenters who continue to champion persuasion in an age of polarization. As the book’s subjects grapple with how to call out injustices while calling in those who don’t agree with them but just might one day, they point a way to healing, and changing, a fracturing country.

Story
Never having run for office before, Katie Porter charted a new path in 2018 when she was elected to Congress as a Democrat in historically conservative Orange County, California. Underestimated as a single mom and chided for her progressive values, Katie defied expectations. Then, using her signature whiteboard, she began to take CEOs and corrupt government officials to task in Congressional hearings. The videos went viral, introducing Americans to her no-bullshit style, and making her a coveted guest on cable news and late-night television.

Katie Porter is a highly underrated, yet highly skilled educator and public servant. Pay attention to her education. This help is not at all common among our federal elected officials. It turns my stomach that my congressman is a nut job from Rifle, Colorado. Katie for the US SENATE!

Story
When Reyna Grande was nine years old, she walked across the US-Mexico border in search of a home, desperate to be reunited with the parents who had left her behind years before for a better life in the City of Angels. What she found instead was an indifferent mother, an abusive, alcoholic father, and a school system that belittled her heritage. With so few resources at her disposal, Reyna finds refuge in words, and it is her love of reading and writing that propels her to rise above until she achieves the impossible and is accepted to the University of California, Santa Cruz.

It has been years since I have listened or read a book for fun. As a middle aged Chicana, this story pierced my soul and gave me solace from my own familial trauma. It also reminded me that breaking free from the traditional mold of wanting a full life as a woman is not wrong. Brava!

It gets annoying when the speaker felt the need to lower her voice to imitate a mans voice when speaking the male parts. This Made listening to the narrative difficult. I’m only half way through the book and had to order the physical book in order to finish. The content is too good not to finish this book. I’m a medical professional and this formation is very important to my research in this field. Please revise this piece. It’s like nails on a chalkboard.
