Story
On an August night in 1994, French counterespionage officers seized the world"s most wanted terrorist from a villa in the Sudan. After more than two decades on the run, Carlos "the Jackal" had finally been caged. For years he had murdered and bombed his way to notoriety, evading capture thanks to powerful backers and the blunders of Western secret services. Jackal is the definitive biography of this self-proclaimed "professional revolutionary", ladies man, and cold-blooded killer.

The narrator can by dry but serviceable.
It’s written like a crime detective story where Carlos is framed to be like a common delusional thug than a revolutionary. Most great leaders from Napoleon to MacArthur were equally as delusional.
The focus of the author is to refute his myth.
From that view point it goes into great detail how a Latin American Cold War revolutionary became a champion against Zionism and the murky world that entails.
If you enjoyed the French mini series i recommend it.

As a American I didn"t care for this man growing up. But after reading, wow he has balls. I admire his dedication to his cause. His assessment of guerilla fighting and military strategy is useful to any military historian. He also gives a great criticism of the problems in Africa that rings still today and also his criticism of communism. Maybe he would of eventually been a social democrat.
I completely sympathize with the horrors he seen in Guatemala and his criticisms against the Banana Republics and US involvement in that.
If you think he just a crazed communist. You are wrong. A very complex man who means well. This is a tale that should be read with proper context.

The Resistance is in ruins. In the wake of their harrowing escape from Crait, what was once an army has been reduced to a handful of wounded heroes. Finn, Poe, Rey, Rose, Chewbacca, Leia Organa - their names are famous among the oppressed worlds they fight to liberate. But names can only get you so far, and Leia’s last desperate call for aid has gone unanswered. From the jungles of Ryloth to the shipyards of Corellia, the shadow of the First Order looms large, and those with the bravery to face the darkness are scattered and isolated.

Reviewed: 05-28-22
This was basically a mediocre cash grab book I listen to before the last Star Wars movie came out. It connected with the bloodline book but not with the movie. I wish the movies somehow showed characters that were only in the book so they felt like they are part of the same universe.
Like always greatly produced product like any other Star Wars audio book. But story is a waste of time and don"t feel like it connected to the movies.

The film had mix reviews when it came out since the tone didn’t fit with the star power performers. I enjoyed it for what it is, enough for me to listen to this audio book. I just watch the film my first time on the criterion collection app.
The narrator of the book matched the tone of the movie perfectly. Some may find it boring but I found it fascinating.
If you enjoyed the movie but want to get deeper into the plot line I highly recommend this audio book. I’m glad it came with the subscription.

Great Narrator for an already amazing story

This book was based off of one of my favorite movies so I had high expectations for a great narrator. This book exceeded that expectation.
The book"s story line was better than the movies and Bell"s backstory added more flavor than the movie.

If you love the Netflix series get this book.

I was fascinated by the Netflix series so I had to get this book. It was written and narrated perfectly and the authors even updated the book while the series was being made.
Charles Sohabraj life before the murder cases was even more fascinating. Not saying you will sympathize with him but you can see he was a rejected but a ambitious man.
Richard and Julie seem at odds with each other. Richard having a similar background as Charles and Julie being the grounded female skeptic. Makes you wonder what went on behind the scenes. You can tell some conflict within the writing.
The opening chapters made you reflect the damage western countries done during their force addiction of East Asian cultures to Heroin and other drugs that the hippies walked along.
Overall the book is not too long or too short. Glad I got this biography instead of the Thompson one which sounded too redundant.

Story
The Mahabharata is one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India. It is of immense importance to the culture of the Indian subcontinent and is a major text of Hinduism. Its discussion of human goals (artha or "purpose", kama or "pleasure", dharma or "duty" and moksha or "liberation") takes place in a long-standing tradition, attempting to explain the relationship of the individual to society and the world (the nature of the "self") and the workings of karma.

I been debating about this version or Krishna Dharma"s version for audible since the Bibek Debroy is incomplete. Krishna Dharma"s Ramayana has been one of my favorite books since it came out in the early 2000s I think. But his Mahabharata I could never get too far due to its complexity so I feel I wanted to tackle it on audible.
After reading some of Ramesh Menon masterpiece I knew I was getting shorted on Krishna Dharma in regard to details of the story but after listening to this version it was very detailed but put together in a very boring fashion and none of the beginning scenes were intense or dramatic compare to other versions.
The narrator was great but she basically had to read a text book. The Krishna Dharma though lacking in content focused on a real story. So I rather stomach through the bad production value of that one which I feel is tolerable than listening to this high production value textbook.

Story
In 1965, the US government helped the Indonesian military kill approximately one million innocent civilians. This was one of the most important turning points of the 20th century, eliminating the largest communist party outside China and the Soviet Union and inspiring copycat terror programs in faraway countries like Brazil and Chile. But these events remain widely overlooked, precisely because the CIA"s secret interventions were so successful.

Glad to listen to this after the election. Provides much needed information I was discussing with my coworkers.
Narration isn’t bad either.
It doesn’t glorify him, it goes over his mistakes and humanize his errors as something any of us could of fumbled on with the passions of the times.
It’s great to hear of his transformation too during this current state of politics.
I’m a millennial war veteran and been working covid across the country. The book speaks well to me.

Salma Bakkioui has always loved living in her suburban cul-de-sac, with her best friend, Mariam, next door, and her boyfriend, Amir, nearby. Then, things start to change. Friends start to distance themselves. Mariam"s family moves when her father"s patients no longer want a Muslim chiropractor. Even trusted teachers look the other way when hostile students threaten Salma at school. After a terrorist bombing nearby, Islamophobia tightens its grip around Salma and her family. Shockingly, she and Amir find themselves with few allies as they come under suspicion for the bombing.

I have to admit I am not a teenage girl so I have to say off the bat I am not the intended audience for this book. But for what it is,, its a tale of a struggling teenage half Arab, half white Muslim girl with a chronic condition who lives in a time of a terrorist plot.
Sounds interesting but the interesting part is not the terrorist stuff but the reflection of being a teenage White American girls upbringing but also rooted in the immigrant story of a past back ground. Rabiah"s diverse cultural experiences really reflects well on this book. Its intelligent and filled with pop culture references. I think young Muslim woman will find lots to cherish in this book. But I also feel it will give non Muslims a glimpse of an immigrant story not unlike Jewish or Irish American stories of the past.
The Arabic pronunciation in this audio book are done well. My only complaint is her male voices don"t sound well. It"s not too bad since the male roles are not as abundant as the main characters dialogues.
