For her entire life, the Name-Bearer's sole purpose has been to receive and deliver the names of the future monarchy from the Flowers of Prophecy. But when the child is finally born and the Name-Bearer is sent to the Flowers, they refuse to name him. Instead they deliver a prophecy; another child was born who is more worthy of the Naming, and if they are found and brought before them it will usher in a reign of peace. Having failed in her duties the Name-Bearer is considered a traitor to the crown, and must hide among an elite sect of warrior women.

A story with great charm, whimsy and culture. A suporter of the author and waited a while for an audio release. Did not disappoint. The story is very much character driven, and an outstanding calibration of a "hero's journey" and "chosen one" story.

gay teen angst with a pinch of magic

gay teen angst with a pinch of 90s Charmed (the tv show). its a good coming of age gay youth story. i can see myself growing to like the characters if given more time with them. wish there was more about the time together at the school. it just gently grazes dark academia. great if you are looking for gaycoming of age youth story that touches more than just "young romance for the first time". hoping theres more to come.

Story
Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

history won't call them cousins but tragic lovers

Reads like a teen's journal. historical fiction with a hint of fantasy. Light on romance.
The fantasy part of the story feels less like supernatural and more like superstition. Not a lot of descriptive language of the world around them.

Story
If one has to get their heart broken, I highly recommend it be just before inheriting some far-off property from an unknown relative. It’s convenient for putting distance between oneself and all that unpleasantness. I hardly knew what to expect from the sprawling Yorkshire estate of which I suddenly found myself in possession. All I know is the magic of the place soothed all my troubles. Nothing captivated me more than a simple journal I found. It chronicled the days of a man named Eustace, a kindred spirit in whose lonely words I found companionship.

hard to follow no distinction between whos talking
Reviewed: 09-22-19
The British accent tames time to get uses to. it's hard to follow convenience when everyone sounds the same. I find myself using context clues to figure out where, when and who is talking and taking place. The story is okay if not lacking a deep hook.

i really enjoyed the story. From rookie freshmen to skilled seniors. i really felt well invested, and in each book the stakes getting higher felt natural. the characters each have individual roles and traits that made it easy to always remember whos who. with a large cast of characters they all get their moments big and small to feel like they're there own person. another plus goes to the to writing of the narrator , it felt like a character all on its its own. not sure if that had to do with the terrific voice actor they had reading but i enjoyed listening to him. i also need to add sometimes i had to go back and check to see if there were more than one person providing reading because he did a great job making each character sound unique enough that i never got confuse on who was speaking or mixing who was supposes to be talking. i look forward to re-listening to this story down the road.
