Overwrought
Reviewed: 01-16-22
Unable to suspend my disbelief in the story. One can see the plot points a mile ahead as if the author thought, “I need more drama, let’s see how many ways I can make this character suffer.” Unbelievable characters and development. Reuse of descriptive words; three times a person’s actions were described as a ‘terrier’ and it wasn’t a particularly apt description the first time. I would have liked to have the story shown to me rather than told.
The voice narration is just okay, it was read more like a romance novel. There wasn’t enough range by the voice narrator to differentiate the characters’ voices.

A Bit Sentimental
Reviewed: 01-03-21
Marin Ireland was perfect; too bad the story was predictable and overly sentimental. I felt like I was being hit over the head with saccharine bags. I really liked, "A Man Called Ova" and have read others by Blackman but I think I’ll give it a rest for a time.

Amelia Peabody inherited two things from her father: a considerable fortune and an unbendable will. The first allowed her to indulge in her life's passion. Without the second, the mummy's curse would have made corpses of them all.

This was a fun way to spend time listening to a story. I thought the story was rather weak however, and that I saw nearly everything coming ahead of time and the nuances in the narration wasn’t enough to hold my interest for very long.

Lots of twists and turns that kept my interest. Well narrated also. Not too heavy with the romance but still there. I’ll look for more by Lisa Gardner.

Great Story; Kept Me Guessing
Reviewed: 07-15-20
Very good story. I liked the main character and how I couldn’t guess what was coming.
Narration was a bit bumpy as it was very difficult in the beginning to know if the main character was speaking or the narrator. The transitions were awkward. Sometimes the main character could be noticed to have taken a break and come back in to record and didn’t bother to match his tempo or tone. I also didn’t know we weren’t in first person omniscient until a female voice jumped in and made me jump. One female character was believable; the other was totally off.
Story? AWESOME!

Story
In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue - Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is - she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

I had a hard time with the narrator
Reviewed: 03-04-20
I had a hard time with the narrator being able to understand who was talking. Sometimes I would hear Tris saying something and then realized it was really Four. Very confusing.
It was a good story, when I downloaded it I did not know it was young adult but I was OK with that.

I enjoyed the twists and turns in this book. The narration was very good but got confusing at times. For instance someone who was supposed to be Dutch with long blonde hair had a Chinese accent. Or someone who was Jewish had a Chinese accent.

Narrator sounds like Wendy Malick
Reviewed: 08-04-19
Interesting premise for a private eye book but I couldn't get past the overreaching of the author to tell us she knew her stuff from the 70s and from today. FYI? I don't know a single person from that era that refers to the Vietnam war as 'Nam', especially a 20-something. And didn't the narrator know that skateboarding kids don't 'career' around corners but perhaps 'careen'? Sure, it's an editing error but it's made twice within the book and then twice again by voice. And let's talk about voices; not one of the male voices allowed me to believe they were voiced by anyone except Wendy Malick from the show, "Hot in Cleveland." Ms. Malick is a one-note wonder and this is a one voice narrator.
So many tropes in this book and lots of telling not showing the story. Even more annoying were the unlikely coincidences. If it weren't for it being my book clubs' choice this month, I would have returned it.
This book can't decide if it's a beach read, a romance novel, a coming-of-age book or a private eye paperback. Make a choice.
