The narrator was excellent. The stories and historical fragments were interesting, thoroughly told and timelines through each culture were consistent.
A delightful listen, will listen to it again.

The information was good, well presented and thoughtful. The author’s confessions surrounding his own conversion and hisbelief in the supremacy of music as a vehicle to the mystical were not a surprise. Imho the book would have been better if it were less a lecture than a conversation-but given hos job, understandable.

Descriptions of piloerection, tears, lowered vagal tone, oxytocin and dopamine release stand in for a more thorough explication of awe. Understandably awe is individual and culturally bound somewhat but the epiphany of awe as a system (while stating pretty much everything is a system from a systematic view of the universe) felt, to me, wanting.

Interesting philosophical questions but stories told around them were soporifically slow paced and repetitive, imho, not worth the money or time spent.

The time looping plot had many many characters, some with multiple names and different names in the various eras they looped through. Several populations of fantastic nonhuman creatures with many powers also contribute to the goth plus techie feel of the story.
There was a lot of philosophy 101 mansplaining, essentially Faith v. Determinism, throughout by several different characters-tends to drag the momentum unduly.
Gist is Main character lost the love of his life on their wedding day so destroys the world throughout many looping eras of time dragging many others with him in his battles and machinations. Lots of gory action, little to no insight.

The presumption of the mainland researcher telling the main character who she (island dweller) was, what she should do, what she believed, wanted and needed all the while being angry for her need for attention and affection was pretty galling-but unfortunately not unusual when an « elevated » culture meets another they consider less so.
The writing was beautiful, the characters richly described, a very good listrn.

I liked how well the author was able to allow us to like (or dislike) the main characters through her careful often detailed descriptions of their thoughts, actions, attire and aspirations. Common plot uncommonly well told.
