Story
Clare and Henry have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was 36. They were married when Clare was 23 and Henry was 31. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future. His disappearances are spontaneous, his experiences unpredictable, alternately harrowing and amusing.

Started strong but meandered towards the end
Reviewed: 12-09-24
The concept is great and the voice performances wonderful, but as it got further into the book it begins to meander. Lots of questions are left unanswered while others we don't care to have answered are answered. A frustrating end to a book that really started strong. There was enough there for me to finish, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it.

List-style format doesn't work well in audio
Reviewed: 10-21-24
This wasn't a bad book, but it wasn't the greatest, either. Its "information by list" style probably was not suited to audio format. I was also a bit annoyed by the discussion about people and success. We all know that you can work really hard and not procrastinate and still not succeed. It would have been better to just stick with how to overcome the bad habit of procrastination. I also did not get any new methods that I hadn't heard before, so it didn't really have anything new for me to try.

Story
When Elwood Curtis, a black boy growing up in 1960s Tallahassee, is unfairly sentenced to a juvenile reformatory called the Nickel Academy, he finds himself trapped in a grotesque chamber of horrors. Elwood’s only salvation is his friendship with fellow “delinquent” Turner, which deepens despite Turner’s conviction that Elwood is hopelessly naive, that the world is crooked, and that the only way to survive is to scheme and avoid trouble.

There is a reason this book won a Pulitzer. It is an astounding book, and even with the grim subject matter, I was riveted throughout. J.D. Jackson does a masterful performance with this difficult material, and I could not wait to pick up where I left off. It is an absolute masterpiece that should not be missed.

My kids are mostly grown, but I still found this book interesting, and I wished I'd had it when my kids were younger. Not only is the basic psychology interesting, but the methodologies of keeping calm and working through feelings as a cornerstone to dealing with difficult topics seemed effective, no matter what situation you're discussing. Many examples for a variety of topics and ages and relevant topics for today. Worth checking out.

Great storytelling makes this a classic
Reviewed: 08-01-24
I enjoyed listening to this production, even if it is 40 hours long. The tale is epic, and the performance by Lee made it come to life. In my mind, the key shortcoming of the book is that the outcomes of plot points are often predictable. But the masterful storytelling and engaging characters easily overcome it. Definitely worth your time if you enjoy historical fiction with great character development.

Inspector Rajput is called to handle another string of gruesome murders, and it all takes place during a monsoon. I enjoyed this thriller, though I found it a little more difficult to follow than the last book. The narrator does an excellent job of differentiating the voices, so that each is distinct. I really like the characters, and here we add the viewpoint of Sita Naik and learn more about her. If you enjoyed the first book, you will enjoy this one too.

After years of dancing in Mumbai’s bars, Tara Mondal was desperate for a new start. So when a client offered her a life-changing payout to indulge a harmless, if odd, fantasy, she accepted. The setup was simple: wear a blue-sequined saree, enter a crowded railway station, and escape from view in less than three minutes. It was the last time anyone saw Tara.

I really liked this book, especially the character development. Each character had their own histories and motives, and the reader did an excellent job making distinct voices for each one. The only quibble I had with it was that the mystery itself had maybe one too many twists and turns to easily follow via audio book. There were so many characters it was hard to distinguish which was which. I look forward to trying the next in the series. Worth a listen!

Yuki Hirano is just out of high school when his parents enroll him, against his will, in a forestry training program in the remote mountain village of Kamusari. No phone, no internet, no shopping. Just a small, inviting community where the most common expression is “take it easy.” At first, Yuki is exhausted, fumbles with the tools, asks silly questions, and feels like an outcast. Kamusari is the last place a city boy from Yokohama wants to spend a year of his life. But as resistant as he might be, the scent of the cedars and the staggering beauty of the region have a pull.

Fun story and look at rural Japan

I enjoyed this book about a young man who, after he graduates from school, is signed up by his parents to participate in a government-sponsored job program to promote logging. Great characters and a good perspective about what is actually important in life. It was a fun look at a different culture and the rural life there. The narrator, Brian Nishii, does a delightful job of bringing the main characters to life. If you want a lighthearted and fun read, this is a good one!

There may be no tidy solutions or pithy answers to life’s big challenges, but Michelle Obama believes that we can all locate and lean on a set of tools to help us better navigate change and remain steady within flux. In The Light We Carry, she opens a frank and honest dialogue with listeners, considering the questions many of us wrestle with: How do we build enduring and honest relationships? How can we discover strength and community inside our differences? What tools do we use to address feelings of self-doubt or helplessness? What do we do when it all starts to feel like too much?

This book, talking about how to be a better person in the world, is excellent and she had great stories and experiences to share. But its flow was a little bit disjointed. Still worth listening to. A positive breath of fresh air in a negative world.

What does a person do when they're feeling lost in the world? If you're Laura Coleman, you go backpacking in Bolivia and, on a whim, volunteer at a wildlife rescue center, and it changes your life. The book is read by the author and her reading of her experiences at the center and how it fundamentally changed her is delightful, heartbreaking, funny, and sad. She's an excellent storyteller, and her connection with one particular Puma is the center of her transformation. give this one a try!
