Story
With an ailing mother to care for, Lisa Grant takes the first job she can find: research assistant to District Attorney Scott Buchanan. What Lisa expects to be a mind-numbingly boring task turns into anything but when a missing-persons case draws her attention. The details of the case are engrossing: an entire family — father, mother, and two children — disappeared without a trace more than 28 years ago. Except that’s not all: the mother in a photo Lisa finds could be her own twin.

This was not bad, but not great either. The story line was too quick during what should have been the moments of suspense. You never really had to wonder what was happening because it was given away in the next sentence. Still, it was interesting and not boring. The narrator obviously had some confusion, most likely due to the way the book was written, as to who was speaking. She would change voices in the middle of a monologue so it would seem 2 or 3 different people were speaking when it was obviously 1. I found this humorous, I am not sure how this wasn't caught and corrected since it happened more often than not.

Weak

This book was super frustrating. The main character was a total push over, to the point the book was not believable. I kept waiting for her to stand up for herself. I kept thinking there will be a moment when she will inevitably snap! No moment ever came. Sure, she did voice a little frustration, however it wasn't anywhere near enough. The best friend was not at all likable. Audible labeled this book as a romantic comedy, however there was zero to little comedy. The romance was severely lacking and totally unbelievable. All in all I will say that it was well written grammatically speaking. That is the only good thing I can say as this was one of the most disappointing books I have ever read/listened to in my life, and I have read thousands.

I've been humiliated, shut out, and gossiped about all through high school. His pranks and rumors got worse as time wore on. I even went to Europe for a year, just to avoid him. But I'm done hiding from him now, and there's no way I'll allow him to ruin another year. He might not have changed, but I have. It's time to fight back.

Love the story

I read this book a while back in the Kindle version. I was in the mood for this type of storyline so decided to use my credit to listen to it. The narrator would have completely ruined it for me had I not already previously read this book. She sounded more like an English professor than a teenage girl. It honestly felt like I was sitting in a college lecture hall listening to a professor read aloud. It was boring at times. I cannot really explain why this bothered me so, as I am typically a fan of good diction. I guess it just felt extremely weird to hear a teenage girl pronounce words so perfectly. It seemed to make the story less believable. I truly wish this had been performed by someone younger and a little less proper, this narrator did not do this book justice.

My past comes back to terrorize me. Someone wants me dead, and the closer I get to the truth, the more I realize my whole life is a lie. I am no longer sure what is more frightening - the attempts on my life or the guy whose heart and soul are synchronized with mine.

Extremely inconsistent writing.
Reviewed: 04-04-17
This book could have been written by a 10 year old who is just learning to say curse words. It was extremely inconsistent and immature. One minute the characters are cursing like they are grown and the next they are saying things an eight-year-old would say. The heroin is not at all likeable. Her thoughts and feelings are always in conflict. She is inconsistent to say the least. She actually whines about how strong she is. How can a character whine about not being a whiny person? Very frustrating! The hero could possibly be developed into a likeable character, you do not really get to know him at all. I am actually upset with myself for finishing this book. This is one of those books that is so bad it makes you angry with the author. The narration is decent at least.

Just freakin' great. Worse, she totally doesn't fit in with her dad's perfect new country-club family. So Whitley acts out. She parties. Hard.

frustrating...
Reviewed: 05-14-16
This was so frustrating. I guess it would have been a good book for a 12 year old, however the language and sexual content was conflicting with the childish story line. Either the story line needed more depth, chemistry, and less self loathing from Whitley or the language and sex talk needs to be taken out since it was really kind of out of place anyway. There was zero chemistry and to be honest, was a bit boring. I loved the DUFF, this was a let down in comparison.

Painful listen...not in a good way.

Although the story was pretty good, the narrator was awful. I only finished because I couldn't return it. The narrator made Tracey sound like a stupid, pathetic, whiny brat. Nixon was just weird and not at all sexy or mysterious the way the author intended for him to be. Chase sounded like an arrogant surfer dude. The characters we're hard to like and identify with because the narration was just so bad. I honestly hope this narrator did not get paid for this performance. I will probably check out the second book in the series, but definitely will not to go with the audible book.
