this one is embarrassing and uncomfortable to hear. I don't care for smut, and this one is that. Gwen is mostly described as a sexy, sex driven person.

Born Princess Vanessa of Atlantica, the ambitious young royal was one of two children born to the great King Poseidon. She and her brother, Triton, were groomed from birth to rule. Yet only one would ascend that coveted throne. While carefree Triton flits through his training with a cavalier demeanor and beguiling charm, Vanessa’s hunger for her father’s acceptance drives her to push herself to the limits of magic and to combat to become a leader worthy of her people. When war against the humans ravages their once regal kingdom, political sides are chosen.

Story okay but narration annoying
Reviewed: 08-26-23
It's an okay story but I found it difficult to listen because it's all in that rich-girl-catty effect which doesn't do anything for feeling connected to the character Vanessa.

must read

I loved this book so much. It provides insight and context to the women of art history. most are euro-centric, but there are also references to global artists and movements. I was left wanting to visit some artists more in depth -- which fuels more reading and enjoyment. the book covers the past to current with lively anticipation of the future. the narration is author driven and so captivating and passionate.

Story
In the 1940s and '50s, when the newly minted Jet Propulsion Laboratory needed quick-thinking mathematicians to calculate velocities and plot trajectories, they didn't turn to male graduates. Rather, they recruited an elite group of young women who, with only pencil, paper, and mathematical prowess, transformed rocket design, helped bring about the first American satellites, and made the exploration of the solar system possible.

too much focus on marriage, beauty, and such
Reviewed: 02-18-23
I was really looking forward to learning about the women of science. However, there were overly dense sections devoted to dating, marriage, and even a trivial workplace beauty pageant. There is a lot of the author assuming how these real women felt, without any real basis. Rocket launches and the like barely got a paragraph.

Story
The New York Times Magazine’s award-winning “1619 Project” issue reframed our understanding of American history by placing slavery and its continuing legacy at the center of our national narrative. This new book substantially expands on that work, weaving together 18 essays that explore the legacy of slavery in present-day America with 36 poems and works of fiction that illuminate key moments of oppression, struggle, and resistance.

I don't think I would have been able to find time to read this, so having the audio book is wonderful. I love how well history is tied into our experience today.
