Story
Reidon Ward's first semester at the Galens Institute hasn't been without reward. In just over half a year he's gone from the weakest cadet at school to one of the strongest in his class, and there's no one left who would argue that his Device, Shido, isn't the most terrifying CAD they've ever laid eyes on. Still, Rei knows that his climb has barely begun, like he knows that the true fight is only just starting. After all… The Sectionals tournament has arrived. Rei, along with Aria, Viv, Catcher, and a couple unexpected squadmates, are about to face the first real battle of their careers.

Fantastic follow-up to first novel. I can't wait for the next one.
I have read a few complaints about the romance. I think it's cute and not over done. I'd be complaining if there were long, drawn out descriptions of these interactions, but they aren't. They are short and they drive the story further. Nothing gross, awkward or unnecessary.
I was one of the readers that disliked what was happening with Viv and Logan. Now I get it. For me it was one of the most moving scenes in the book when they had the team chat after sectionals. I find Logan to be one of the most interesting characters in the book.
I appreciate that there is less node upgrades happening and that not every stat change has to be announced every time someone levels up. It's my least favorite thing in litrpg and I'm glad it was a smaller part of this novel compared to the first one.
I also enjoyed the fights a lot more in this one. In the last one I thought they were overdone especially when they didn't involve main characters. But in this one they basically all involve main characters and are exciting to listen to. Do I wish there was a little more scenery still? Yes! But I was never bored or thought the fights dragged out.
The few nit pics I had with the first book were not present in this one...almost like the author read reviews and applied the feedback!
I'm so intrigued by the bad guys now. I have so many questions. I don't even know who the bad guys are besides the Arkons. Is it Central? Is it Rei's family? Aria's family? The Mind? Maybe the Arkons don't even exist! And why the heck does Rei's sister want to kill him? I greatly enjoyed the firing of Reese! Just all around a great listen. Loved the first one, loved the second one, and on pins and needles for the third.
Shaping up to be hands down one of the best series I've ever read or listened to.
Keep them coming!
And Luke Daniels is so talented. His voice is like warm honey and his voice acting skills amazing.

Decent story, unhappy ending
Reviewed: 02-07-23
I did enjoy this book quite a lot. Much better than book 3, though I may go back and re-listen to that one. One thing that made me giggle was how much Iron sounds like Jimmy on South Park. That doesn't really jive with the character, but that just makes it funnier!
I don't get why people think this book is somehow political. I think people who are interpreting it that way are just overly sensitive to view points that they disagree with. Sometimes a story is just a story.
My biggest issue with this book is how sad it is. I didn't want to say goodbye to Carris and the ending is heartbreaking. I love the fantasy genre because it is an escape from the brutality of real life. This is brutal and awful and sad...definitely not an escape.

The company of the Ring is torn asunder. Frodo and Sam continue their journey alone down the great River Anduin - alone, that is, save for the mysterious creeping figure that follows wherever they go. This continues the classic tale begun in The Fellowship of the Ring, which reaches its awesome climax in The Return of the King.

Amazing Narration
Reviewed: 10-21-21
This was phenomenal. I, unlike other reviewers, could not stand to listen to the original narrator. I don't read much anymore for various reasons. I am wholly dependent on Audible. Friends, family and even the girl who does my eyelashes have heard me complain that I haven't been able to relive one of my all time favorite stories of all time because the narrator ruins it for me.
Andy is absolutely phenomenal. Thank you so much for reconnecting me with the book form of this timeless journey through Middle Earth, Andy. Simply outstanding!

More story please!

I enjoyed this but I needed more story.
There is a ton of action in this book but little substance. The story doesn't move forward. About 15 of the 18 hours are spent in towers (dungeons) detailing encounters. That only leaves 3 hours for the reader to learn what is happening in the main story line.
I was super excited for this book. I pre-ordered it several months ago. I'm less excited about the next installment. There was nothing here to hook me or get me invested in what happens next.
The narration, as always, was fantastic!

The Wheel of Time turns and Ages come and go, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth returns again. In the Third Age, an Age of Prophecy, the World and Time themselves hang in the balance. What was, what will be, and what is, may yet fall under the Shadow.

Another fantastic tale in the saga
Reviewed: 04-01-18
I am really enjoying this series. My only frustration with it is the portrayal of the female characters. Instead of making them dynamic and conflicted they are very one dimensional. They are either spoiled, bitchy, simpering, weak, or foolish and each one is only apparently capable of being one of those. It is an unfortunate flaw that is not at all uncommon in fantasy and science fiction writing. I can only conclude that many of these authors don't have a lot of knowledge and experience with women. At times it is frustrating and I find myself wanting to skip over some of this childish ranting. But it is such a great story that I read (listen) on. As always, the narration is fantastic.

Great book. Very engaging. Kept my interest for all 40 hours! Narration is fantastic. They do such an amazing job of individualizing the voices of the characters but keeping it feeling like it's being read rather than voice acting. I wouldn't enjoy it a fraction as much if the readers weren't so excellent.

I agree with others who do not like this narrator. I was looking forward to listening to the LotR trilogy after The Hobbit. But I will not be purchasing them because of the narrator. I am really bummed that such a classic series was read by someone who couldn't do it justice.
